Cross Country Concludes at Halloween Classic

NEWARK, N.J.—Sarah Lawrence College men's and women's cross country concluded the 2013 season at the Nick Russo Halloween Classic, hosted by New Jersey Institute of Technology at Branch Brook Park on Sunday.

On the women's side, SLC sophomore Mary Kauffman (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) finished as runner-up for the fifth time this year. She crossed the finish of the 5K course in 19:19.1, just 5.5 seconds behind the unattached event winner.

All-HVIAC honoree Natalie Grieco (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Fenwick) was the second Gryphon across the line, finishing in 23:46.9 for 13th place. Junior Elizabeth Emery (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) and sophomore Pauline Stanfiel (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) crossed the finish together in 17th and 18th place, respectively.

Katie Zimmermann (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) and Kate Cassirer (Manhattan, N.Y./Spence School) stuck together throughout the course and placed 26th and 27th, while Melissa Molina (Union, N.J./Union) rounded out the team in 35th place.

For the men, Caleb Jaster (New Hampton, N.H./Sant Bani) posted a time of 18:41.7 for eighth place in the team's first race at the 5K distance. Stian Lothe (Bergen, Norway/Akademiet Bergen) crossed the line next, stopping the clock at 19:59.5, winning a four-way sprint to slip under the 20-minute mark.

Justin Heftel (Spokane, Wash./Saint George's School) finished in 24th place with a time of 23:28.1, followed by his All-HVIAC running partner Pat Newsom (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) in 25th place. Senior Luc Mitchell (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) rounded out the team in 30th place.

For Sarah Lawrence, the 2013 marks the program's first year under Head Coach Erin Pomykala and final year in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Green and White had six HVIAC Championship medalists and three All-HVIAC runners. SLC departs the HVIAC and is set to join the Skyline Conference in 2014-15.
