OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.—Backed by the depth of the Gryphon lineup, Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming conquered SUNY College at Old Westbury (2-6), 124-79, in a non-conference meet on Thursday.
Sarah Lawrence (5-1) only won six of the 11 events but pulled away to clinch the meet with three events remaining, thanks to 10 runner-up performances.
The day began with the 200 yard medley relay. Sophomore
Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton), junior
Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and rookies
Colette Harley (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and
Gabby Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett) dominated the field with a mark of 2:11.53. The second-place duel was close, but
Jaime Chu (Hong Kong/Monte Vista),
Alayna Bone (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island),
Lydia Mullan (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) and
Geneva Baldauf (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) edged their Panther opponents by 0.08 second with a time of 2:28.16.
Junior
Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) won her first event of the day by taking the 1000 yard freestyle in 12:33.17.
Cecilia Nicholson (Tucson, Ariz./St. Gregory College Prep) touched the wall next with a time of 15:11.11;
Sky Mihaylo (Albany, Ore./West Albany) finished fourth (16:20.23).
In the 200 yard freestyle, Pulitano (2:20.32),
Monika Mednick (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) (2:34.54) and Mullan (2:47.21) collected points for second, third and fourth place.
Risica posted an individual win in the 50 yard freestyle, sprinting to a half-second win in 27.74 seconds.
Dzana Ashworth (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) also scored, taking fourth place (31.44).
Amberchan won the 200 yard individual medley, posting an effort of 2:38.34. Bone was second to touch the wall in 2:57.38, while Mihaylo was fourth (3:20.25).
The Gryphons posted a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 yard butterfly. Harley led the way in 1:06.06, while Ashworth placed second (1:19.45), and Mullan was third (1:28.09).
Risica (59.77) led SLC with a runner-up finish in the 100 free. She was followed closely by Chu and Baldauf in third and fourth place, respectively.
Sarah Lawrence clinched the team triumph by earning eight points in the 100 yard backstroke. Amberchan finished as runner-up (1:12.23) followed by Mednick in third place (1:17.64). Baldauf's fifth-place time (1:51.44) earned the point that gave the Gryphons a 98-50 advantage, securing certain victory.
Bates (6:06.21) picked up her second win by cruising to first place in the 500 yard freestyle. Harley placed second (6:09.86), and Nicholson was fourth (7:36.51).
In the final individual event, Pulitano (1:20.67) and Bone (1:27.52) captured second and third place in the 100 yard breaststroke. The Gryphons concluded the day with Bates, Mednick, Ashworth and Chu swimming to second place in the 200 yard freestyle relay (2:02.84).
Sarah Lawrence returns to action on Saturday at Bard College. Due to forecasted winter weather, the meet has been moved up to an 11 a.m. start time.
