MADISON, N.J.—Four SLC records fell as Sarah Lawrence College women's and men's swimming continued action at the second day of the 2013 Ranger Invitational, hosted by Drew University, December 6-8, at F.M. Kirby Pool.
After day two, the Gryphon women remain in second place, while the men retain control of third place.
The Gryphon women began the day by taking third place in the 200 yard medley relay. Sophomore
Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) joined rookies
Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn),
Colette Harley (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and
Gabby Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett) in posting a time of 2:07.35 to earn a dozen team points.
In the 100 yard butterfly, Harley surpassed her own SLC record in the event, touching the wall in 1:05.35 for second place. Amberchan completed the final in 1:11.94 for fifth place.
Junior
Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) scored her first points of the day by taking third in the 200 yard freestyle (2:16.80). Junior
Natasha Leonard (Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i/Kealakehe) and sophomore
Monika Mednick (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) also qualified for the 200 free final, finishing in fifth and eighth place, respectively.
Three Gryphons made the final of the 100 yard breaststroke. In a tight race, less than half a second separated third place from sixth. Quirk touched the wall in 1:20.60 for fifth place, while
Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and
Alayna Bone (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) rounded out the championship heat in seventh and eighth place.
The 100 yard backstroke saw Risica and Mednick score the final individual points for the Gryphon women. Pulitano, Leonard, Mednick and Bates rounded out the team scoring with a runner-up (9:43.55) swim in the 800 yard freestyle relay.
With 112 points, SLC holds a slim edge over College of Saint Elizabeth (101 points), while both teams trail host Drew (249 points).
On the men's side, rookies
Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)) and
Jericho Walker-Roberts (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) teamed with sophomore
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) and senior
Doug Rubenstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton) to finish in an SLC record time of 1:49.00 for second place in the 200 yard medley relay.
Martinez paced the field in the 100 yard butterfly, winning the event in 51.23, fractions of a second behind his own SLC record. Rubenstein placed fourth in 1:05.85, while
Nick Ransom (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) scored points with a sixth-place finish (1:16.62).
The men's 200 yard freestyle saw Walker-Roberts swim to a fourth-place finish (2:06.39), while junior
Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) qualified for the final and placed eighth.
In Saturday's 100 breaststroke preliminaries, rookie Chu set a new SLC record of 1:06.97; he later opted out of the final due to entry limits. Ransom represented the Green and White in the evening's finals session, placing seventh in 1:20.76.
Chu also broke the SLC record in the 100 backstroke, first in the preliminaries (58.98) and then again in his winning swim in the championship final (58.58). His victory also set a new Ranger Invitational meet record. Warkus placed sixth in the event, followed by junior
Owen Marks (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) in eighth place.
Through two days, the Gryphon men have scored 109 points, trailing Drew (183) and Farleigh Dickinson Florham (180).
The Ranger Invitational concludes on Sunday with preliminary sessions at 9 a.m. and finals at 4 p.m. Fans can follow the action by downloading the
