NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.—Securing its fourth-consecutive title, Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming triumphed at the 2013 Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Swimming Championship, hosted by College of New Rochelle on Sunday. The Gryphons won 10 of 11 events to extend a championship-winning streak dating back to the 2009-10 season.
Sarah Lawrence secured the team title with 136 points followed by St. Joseph's College Brooklyn with 51 and the host Blue Angels with 14 points.
The Green and White began the morning with a win in the 200 yard medley relay.
Ariana Peschke (Topanga, Calif., La Reina),
Natasha Leonard (Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i, Kealakehe),
Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif., Menlo-Atherton) and
Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J., Mountain Lakes) secured the victory in a time of 2:11.77.
The Gryphons' second squad also medaled with a third-place swim of 2:39.64 by
Sonia Abraham (Orinda, Calif., Miramonte),
Emma Casey (Chicago, Ill., Whitney M. Young Magnet),
Alayna Bone (Mercer Island, Wash., Mercer Island) and
Rachael Frank (Centennial, Colo., Smoky Hill).
Distance specialist
Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J., Morristown) won the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 12:34.45, surpassing her closest competitor by a whopping margin of over 2 minutes. Jumping back in the pool after their relay swim, Frank secured third-place in the 1000, while Abraham finished fifth.
In the 200 yard freestyle, Peschke earned her first individual title, touching the wall in 2:06.55.
Monika Mednick (Menlo Park, Calif., Menlo-Atherton) also medaled with a third-place swim, while
Meg Trask (San Jose, Calif., Piedmont Hills) scored a point for fifth place.
The 50 yard freestyle saw Amberchan take first place in a time of 30.38 seconds with
Addie Sun (Plano, Texas, Plano) also on the podium in third place.
Pulitano won his first gold medal in the 200 yard individual medley, surpassing his closest competitor by nearly four seconds with a time of 2:34.38. Leonard picked up third-place in the race, followed by Bone with fourth-place points.
Amberchan won her second solo race in the 100 yard butterfly, when she stopped the clock at 1:14.85. Trask scored for the second time, adding points for fourth place, while
Leslie Martinez (Mission Viejo, Calif., Trabuco Hills ) got on the scoreboard in fifth place.
The Gryphons also had three point-scorers in the 100 yard freestyle. Among a field of 16 swimmers, Peschke finished in 57.97 seconds, winning by over nine seconds. Sun picked up another individual medal in third place, while Leonard scored for her fourth-place swim.
The only non-Gryphon gold medalist was
Morgan Summers (Bellerose, N.Y., St. Mary's) of St. Joseph's Brooklyn, who edged Pulitano for the top spot in the 100 yard backstroke. In addition to Pulitano's runner-up time of 1:11.79, Mednick captured third place in 1:17.77.
Bates nearly lapped the competition with her winning swim of 6:12.62 in the 500 yard freestyle. Frank posted a fourth-place effort, while
Brenna Rice (Potsdam, N.Y., Potsdam) won the first heat and clinched fifth place overall.
Sarah Lawrence swept the 100 yard breaststroke as Pulitano notched his second individual win in a time of 1:23.19. Bone and Leonard dueled for the next position, and both edged their St. Joseph's foe to place second and third, respectively. Casey rounded out the individual scores with fifth place in the event.
In the day's final race, Bates, Mednick, Trask and Sun pulled out a victory in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The swim marked Bates' third win, and the third point-scoring swim for each of her teammates.
At the conclusion of the meet, four Gryphons were honored as members of the 2012-13 HVWAC All-Conference Team. Bates, Leonard, Peschke and Pulitano were recognized for their contributions to the team this season.
The season is not over for Sarah Lawrence, as the top Gryphons now set their sights on the 2013 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, hosted by Ithaca College, February 20-23.
