Softball Drops Pair in Home Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Despite the Gryphons' tenacious effort in their home opener, Sarah Lawrence College softball was swept by Mount Saint Mary College, 43-1 and 24-0, in a non-conference doubleheader at Mary LeVine Field on Wednesday.

In the day's opening game, Mount Saint Mary (7-7) posted 10 runs in the first inning to take a mighty early advantage.

Sarah Lawrence (0-4) came to the plate confidently, and No. 2 batter Tori Himes (Boulder, Colo., New Vista)belted a shot over the left-field fence  to record the first home run of the game. Junior Ciaran Rhodes (Haddon Township, N.J., Haddon Township) followed with an outfield single, while sophomore Anhad Hundal (New Delhi, India, Vasant Valley School) and rookie Rebecca Kuntz (Northridge, Calif., Chaminade College Preparatory) also hit in the inning before the Knights stranded the three runners.

Sophomore Hannah Gordon (Denver, Colo., George Washington) also had a hit in game one.

Mount Saint Mary kept its offense going as the Knights added 11 runs in the second inning, eight in the third and 14 in the fourth inning to reach its total of 43. Stephanie Karcher had a pair of home runs, including a grand slam in the fourth inning. Ashley Schirripa also had a grand slam in the fourth inning, while Ashley Peel and Erin Moran popped four-baggers.

Pitcher Amanda Barrese earned the win with two strikeouts and a walk, while Gryphon Kuntz had three strikeouts and three walks on the day.

In the nightcap, MSMC scored seven runs in the first inning and bolstered the advantage with a dozen scored in the third inning. Danielle Soto, Karcher and Peel all hit home runs in the game.

Knight Pitcher Victoria Goldbach had a one-hitter in the win. In the fourth inning, Gryphon Lauren Gray (Sea Cliff, N.Y., Waldorf School of Garden City) hit a shot that escaped the grip of sprinting second-baseman Peel, falling to break the no-hitter. Goldbach totaled 11 strikeouts with only one walk.

Sarah Lawrence's Hundal threw a complete game in her first start of the season.

The Gryphons take a week's break before they return to the field for their next game. Sarah Lawrence hosts Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference opponent College of New Rochelle in a non-conference twin bill slated for Friday, April 5, at 4 p.m.
