BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—In the team's first conference action of the season, Sarah Lawrence College softball was defeated by St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 12-1 and 10-1, in Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference play at Mary LeVine Field on Thursday.
In game one, Sarah Lawrence (0-21, 0-1 HVWAC) was first on the scoreboard, striking in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore
Hannah Gordon (Denver, Colo., George Washington) led off the inning with a walk, allowing classmate
Tori Himes (Boulder, Colo., New Vista) to reach first on a fielder's choice. After sophomore
Jen Patten (Canandaigua, N.Y., Naples) advanced Himes to second, rookie
Lauren Gray (Sea Cliff, N.Y., Waldorf School of Garden City) reached on the second walk of the inning.
With runners on first and second base,
Anhad Hundal (New Delhi, India, Vasant Valley School) loaded the pond with a single to center field. With sophomore
Leslie Martinez (Mission Viejo, Calif., Trabuco Hills) at the plate, a Lady Bear wild pitch that skipped off the plate allowed Himes to come home; Martinez reached on the third walk of the inning.
Sarah Lawrence's 1-0 lead was short-lived as St. Joseph's Brooklyn (12-11-1, 2-0 HVWAC) struck back with two runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. Pitcher
Jackie Perillo hit a lead-off homer in the top of the third to help the Lady Bears extend the advantage to 4-1 through three innings.
St. Joseph's put the game out of reach with eight runs scored in the fourth and fifth innings, securing the 12-1 win.
In her collegiate debut, Sarah Lawrence sophomore
Ariana Muoio (Cross River, N.Y., Convent of the Sacred Heart) went 1-for-1 at the plate, earning a base on balls in her other plate appearance.
Rookie Gryphon
Rebecca Kuntz (Northridge, Calif., Chaminade College Preparatory) threw the complete game with four strikeouts and one walk, yielding only six earned runs. Perillo's win was bolstered by four strikeouts with only one walk after her troublesome first inning.
The second game saw a scoreless first inning, despite Gordon reaching third base for the Gryphons. St. Joseph's capitalized on three hits and three errors to score three runs in the top of the second inning. The Lady Bears added one run in each of the next three innings to take a 6-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Himes led off with a single down the left field line and stole second base. Junior
Ciaran Rhodes (Haddon Township, N.J., Haddon Township) reached on a walk before Gordon singled down the left line. Muoio came to the plate and earned her first RBI of the season on an infield single that scored Rhodes, cutting the gap to 6-1.
After a scoreless sixth inning, St. Joseph's tacked on four runs in the seventh, building a 10-1 lead. The Gryphons were dismissed without a run in the bottom of the inning, clinching the Lady Bear sweep.
Hundal tossed a complete game for the Gryphons, notching two strikeouts without any walks.
Cassandra Molinari earned her first win of the season on five innings of work with four strikeouts and four walks.
Sarah Lawrence concludes its conference slate on Friday when the Gryphons travel to face College of New Rochelle. SLC rounds out the weekend with a visit to St. Joseph's Brooklyn for a non-conference rematch on Sunday.
