Cross Country Makes Strides at Bard Invitational

—Sarah Lawrence College cross country made strides at the Bard College Invitational Cross-Country Meet on Saturday. The Gryphon women placed 10th in a field of 16 teams, while the men finished 20th among 22 squad.

Reigning Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Runner of the Week Mary Kauffman (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) paced the Gryphons in record-breaking time. Kauffman's time of 19:06 on the 5K course demolished her previous SLC record time of 19:48 set last season. She placed 21st on the day among a deep field of 175 racers.

Rookie Natalie Grieco (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Fenwick) took 2.5 minutes off her season's best time with a mark of 21:36 on Sunday, just below 7-minute miles. Junior Elizabeth Emery (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) also took 2.5 minutes off of her personal best time, crossing the line in 57th place with a time of 21:54.

Sophomore Pauline Stanfiel (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) beat out her personal best by 42 seconds with an effort of 22:02, good for 67th place. Rookie Kate Cassirer (Manhattan, N.Y./Spence School) set a personal best for the second-straight race, eclipsing the 25-minute mark with a time of 24:59. Following just behind in 25:01, junior Hillary Bernhardt (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) beat her previous best by a four-minute margin.

Katie Zimmermann (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) (25:36) and Mayra Hidalgo Salazar (Naranjo de Alajuela, Costa Rica/Harrison Arts Center) (30:30) rounded out the Gryphons' effort.

On the men's side, two-time HVIAC Honor Roll selection Caleb Jaster (New Hampton, N.H./Sant Bani) continued to lead the Green and White. In the 8K race, the sophomore broke the 31-minute mark for the first time in his career, clocking in at 30:45, good for 87th of 187 runners.

Rookie Pat Newsom (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) saw his best time drop by two minutes, as he finished Saturday's race in 31:37, just outside the top half of the field. In his second collegiate race, rookie Stian Lothe (Bergen, Norway/Akademiet Bergen) took 90 seconds off his time to cross the line in 35:11, just over 7-minute mile pace.

The previous week's HVIAC Rookie honoree, Justin Heftel (Spokane, Wash./Saint George's School) cut 3.25 minutes from his previous best and finished the Bard course in 36:11. Senior Luc Mitchell (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) rounded out the Gryphons with a season-best time of 37:16.

Sarah Lawrence will next race in the College of Staten Island Developmental Meet on Sunday, Sept. 29.
