BRONX, N.Y.—Coming just six points from the team's first-ever invitational title, Sarah Lawrence College women's cross country placed second among 16 teams at the 2nd Annual City College of New York Classic at Van Cortlandt Park on Sunday.
As the top NCAA Division III team in the field, the Gryphons finished with 125 points in the team standings, trailing only Division II school Pace University with 119 points. The Green and White beat out a dozen fellow Division III programs, including Skyline foes Farmingdale State and Mount Saint Vincent.
Sophomore
Natalie Grieco (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Fenwick) led the Gryphons to the finish line for the fifth time this season. She completed the 6K course in 26:19, earning a 12th-place medal in the field of 144 runners.
Medalling in 16th-place, Rookie
Katherine Shepard (Visalia, Calif./Mount Whitney) followed less than a minute later with a time of 27:06, nearly two minutes better than her previous run on the Van Courtlandt course.
The Gryphons third and final medalist was senior
Elizabeth Emery (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico), who won a final sprint to cross the line in 20th place with a mark of 27:33.
SLC's next three runners all crossed the line within 15 seconds of each other. Rookie
Georgia Cohen (New York, N.Y./UNC School of the Arts) stopped the clock in 31:14, a full ten-minute improvement on her first attempt at the course. Classmate
Tiffany Meier (Goleta, Calif./Olive Grove Charter) was next, rounding out the Gryphons' team score with a time of 31:23. Fellow first year
Nawshin Abanti (Dhaka, India/International School Dhaka) was just two places back with a time of 31:28 on her first run at the 6K distance.
Rookie
Marisa Acosta (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) improved her course time by two minutes, finishing among the top 100 with a mark of 34:01. Classmate
Danielle Dyen-Shapiro (Estero, Fla./Cypress Lake) was the Gryphons' final runner, showing an eight-minute improvement at the distance with a run of 41:16.
Sarah Lawrence now prepares for the 2014 Skyline Conference Championship, Oct. 26, hosted by Mount Saint Mary College. The team rounds out the season with a post-championship run at the NJIT Russo Halloween Classic on Nov. 2.
