Meet ResultsBRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Setting two new program records and winning eight of the meet's 13 events, Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming stole the show with a first place finish at the 2014 SLC Sprint Carnival at Campbell Sports Center on Saturday.
Sarah Lawrence (218 points) beat out St. Joseph's College-L.I. (195) for the title, followed by Brooklyn College (85) and F.I.T. (85) tied for third place. St. Joseph's College Brooklyn (33) and College of New Rochelle (21) rounded out the field.
The Gryphons broke their first team record in the first race of the day. Rookie
Hannah Lawson (Portland, Ore./Pacific Crest Community School) teamed with sophomores
Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn),
Gabby Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett) and
Colette Harley (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) to post a 200 yard medley relay time of 2:01.84. Their winning time was three seconds faster than the team's previous best.
Junior
Sam Amberchan (Alameda, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) earned third place in the first individual event of the day, the 200 IM. Rookie
Elizabeth Kroll (Sacramento, Calif./The Met Sacramento) earned the first points of her career with a fourth place in the race.
Lawson picked up her first individual collegiate win with a swim of 59.09 in the 100 freestyle. Senior
Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) wasn't far behind in fourth place.
The 50 backstroke saw Risica compete in her first individual event, touching the wall in second place. Rookie
Sarah Schnapp (Taiwan/Tzu Chi) earned fifth-place points to start her collegiate scoring.
Sophomore
Sky Mihaylo (Albany, Ore./West Albany) made her season debut with a third-place swim in the 50 breaststroke. Senior
Sonia Abraham (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) was less than half a second behind in fourth place.
SLC vaulted to the top of the team standings by winning the next three events. Harley won her first individual event—the 100 butterfly—in a time of 1:06.15, edging out her opponent by less than half a second. Sophomore
Lydia Mullan (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) placed sixth in the race, her first of the season.
Quirk triumphed in her first individual race, winning the 50 freestyle in 27.75 seconds.
Risica completed the trifecta with a win in the 100 backstroke. She touched the wall first in 1:12.62, while Kroll also finished among the event's top three.
The rookies added critical points to the Gryphons' total, as Shnapp and
Rachel Barkowitz (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 IM.
In a tough 200 freestyle field, Harley managed third place, while her senior counterpart Bates placed fourth.
The Green and White secured the team title with wins in each of the final three events. Amberchan started the rally with a swim of 32.47 in the 50 butterfly, while Mullan completed the one-two sweep in second place.
Lawson made waves in her first collegiate competition by breaking her second SLC record. In the 100 breast, she won with a time of 1:14.72, three and a half seconds better than the previous mark set in February by Quirk, who took second in Saturday's event.
The meet was rounded out by a win in the 200 freestyle relay. The Green and White "A" team of Risica, Bates, Quirk and Lawson won the event in 1:54.93. The "B" squad of Mihaylo, Abraham, Mullan and senior
Brenna Rice (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam Central) placed just outside of the scoring in ninth place.
The Gryphons kick off their dual-meet schedule with a trip to SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday, Nov. 8. The double-dual will also feature SLC's first-ever Skyline dual in a showdown against College of Mount Saint Vincent.
