GLEN BURNIE, Md.—On the team's opening weekend of the 2014 season, Sarah Lawrence College softball traveled to take on Trinity Washington University and Notre Dame of Maryland University in non-conference games on Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday, Sarah Lawrence (0-4) faced off against Trinity (2-2) at Gallaudet University. In their first games of the season, the Gryphons fell to the Tigers, 9-1 (5) and 9-6.

The first game saw Trinity post six runs in the bottom of the first inning. After a scoreless second inning, SLC plated its first run of the season when junior Hayley Adams (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy) reached on balls and rounded the bags on a passed ball, wild pitch and fielder's choice.

Trinity went on to add three more runs to close out the five-inning game. Senior Mackenzie Gassett (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills Regional) recorded the Gryphons' only hit, belting a triple in the top of the fourth inning.

In game two, Trinity again took an early lead, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The second inning saw sophomore pitcher Rebecca Kuntz (Northridge, Calif./Chaminade College Preparatory) lead off with a triple before pinch runner Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) was batted in by sophomore Lauren Gray (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Waldorf School of Garden City), who eventually rounded out to cut the gap to 5-2.

The Tigers went on to score two more runs in the third inning, but in the top of the fourth, SLC got one back when Gray batted Gassett across the plate.

Kuntz rounded out the Gryphons' six runs with a two RBI double, bringing home rookie Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) and Gassett.
Shortstop Tori Himes (Boulder, Colo./New Vista) finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI. Gassett was 2-for-3 with two runs, while Kuntz also went 2-for-3, batting in two. Kuntz finished the doubleheader with 10 strikeouts, while Tshering pitched four innings with three strikeouts.

Trinity's Jade Perle earned both wins, tallying 17 strikeouts against one walk and seven earned runs.
On Sunday, SLC's roadtrip continued with a doubleheader against Notre Dame (2-0) at Bachman Sports Complex. The Gators made quick work of the games, winning 20-2 and 17-3.

SLC scored the first run of the opening game when Ariana Muoio (Cross River, N.Y./Convent of the Sacred Heart) and Himes led off with back-to-back singles. Chafatelli brought Muoio across to give the Gryphons a 1-0 edge.

The Gryphons' other run of the first game came when Kuntz led off the fourth with a single. Tshering and Adams also notched hits, plating Gray, who reached on a fielder's choice.

After the Gators put away game one, Sarah Lawrence rebounded with two runs to start game two. Muoio earned her third hit of the day and got into scoring position on a stolen base. Gassett singled, and Kuntz brought Muoio home on an RBI hit. Chafatelli batted in Gassett, and the Green and White went in front, 2-0.

The Gators' offense again ran away with the contest, but SLC's Gassett got another hit and a run in the third inning, while Gray got her first RBI of the series.

Sarah Lawrence is slated to return to action this week with a road trip to Pennsylvania to face Valley Forge Christian College on Wednesday and Penn State University Brandywine on Thursday. Both games are subject to field conditions following wet weather in the Keystone State over the weekend.
