Softball Drops Pair to Valley Forge

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
NEW YORK, N.Y.—Fending off freezing rain and gusty wind, Sarah Lawrence College softball braved the weather to face Valley Forge Christian College in a non-conference doubleheader at Randall's Island on Wednesday. Despite eight runs from the Gryphons, VFCC won both games, 10-2 and 14-6.

Sarah Lawrence (0-6) scored the first run of the day when sophomore Ariana Muoio (Cross River, N.Y./Convent of the Sacred Heart) led off with a hit and rounded the bases to give SLC a 1-0 edge.

Valley Forge (2-2) responded with a three-run first inning and plated four more in the next two innings.

In the top of the fourth inning, rookie Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) led off with a single and eventually crossed the plate to cut the deficit to 7-2. She finished the game 2-for-2 for her first career multiple hit game. Three more Patriot runs in the bottom of the fourth closed out a 10-2 win for VFCC.

Game two saw the Patriots score 11 runs on six hits in the opening inning, quickly putting the Green and White in a deep hole.

SLC got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Sophomore pitcher Rebecca Kuntz (Northridge, Calif./Chaminade College Preparatory) doubled down the left line and came home on a sacrifice fly by Mackenzie Gassett (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills Regional).  Gassett found herself safe on first, and she and sophomore Lauren Gray (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Waldorf School of Garden City) capitalized on the error and came home on a Chafatelli double later in the inning. Catcher Jocilyn Pak (Englewood Cliffs, N.J./Bergen Technical) notched her first career RBI to score Chafatelli and give the Green and White four runs in the inning.

Valley Forge scored one run in the third to take a 13-4 lead, the fourth inning was scoreless.

Gassett doubled to start the fifth inning, and Pak tallied another RBI to give SLC two runs in the fifth inning. VFCC rounded out the scoring with a walk-off double in the bottom of the frame, clinching the 13-6 victory.

On the day, both Gassett and Chafatelli finished the day 3-for-5 from the plate, each with two runs and a double. Pitcher Rebecca Somogyi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishiop John Carroll) started game one and notched a pair of strikeouts in 3.0 innings. Kuntz closed game one and threw a complete game two, totaling six strikeouts and 11 hits in 5.1 innings.

For Valley Forge, Sarah Brugere totaled 10 bases on 4-for-6 hitting while batting in seven runs. Samantha Reed reached base five times, including three hits. Pitcher Molly Rupert earned both wins with eight strikeouts, 10 hits and eight runs (two earned) in 10.0 innings of work.

The Gryphons have a 13-day break to enjoy the remainder of their spring-break holiday. Through the first six games, Gassett, who has hit in every game of the young season, leads the team on 10-for-16 batting (.625) with six runs, a double, triple and an RBI. Muoio has four runs with six hits and is riding a four-game hitting streak, and Gray also has four runs. Kuntz is slugging .529 on five hits, two doubles and a triple.

Sarah Lawrence returns to competition on Tuesday, April 1, when the Gryphons host Briarcliffe College in their home opener at Mary LeVine Field.
