Box Score 2 BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College softball was defeated by Briarcliffe College (N.Y.), 13-0 and 15-2, in a non-conference doubleheader at Mary LeVine Field on Tuesday.
In game one, Briarcliffe broke open a quick lead by scoring the first six runs of the day. Sarah Lawrence (0-8) got its first hit of the day on a second-inning single to right field by rookie
Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock). First-year
Sarah Weldon (New York, N.Y./Millennium) also hit in the frame with a grounder down the left-field line.
The third inning saw Briarcliffe plate four runs, while SLC had two runners reach base on walks by
Tori Himes (Boulder, Colo./New Vista) and
Rebecca Kuntz (Northridge, Calif./Chaminade College Preparatory). The Lady Bulldogs hit back-to-back homers in the fourth inning, but the SLC defense responded with a well-executed double-play in the top of a scoreless fifth inning.
Himes recorded the Gryphons' final hit of the game, doubling down the right field line, but Briarcliffe closed out the 13-0 shutout.
Game two saw Briarcliffe score 11 runs in the first two innings while the SLC batters fell in order. After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third, Sarah Lawrence finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning.
Lara Tshering (Thimphu, Bhutan/The Regent's School Pattaya (Thailand)) and
Hayley Adams (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy) reached on back-to-back walks before Himes singled up the middle to load the bases. HVIAC Rookie of the Week
Mackenzie Gassett (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills Regional) followed to bring two runs to the plate on a single up the middle, making it an 11-2 game.
Briarcliffe rounded out the scoring with four runs in the top of the fourth, while both teams were held without a hit in the final inning and a half.
Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) was the final Gryphon stranded, as she was awarded a base on balls in her only plate appearance of the day.
Kuntz made two starts with one complete game, striking out five in six innings. Somogyi pitched the bulk of game two with one strikeout in four innings.
For Briarcliffe, Lyndsay Coppola hit three home runs, including a grand slam, scoring seven runs with seven runs batted in. Emily Mazzaro also sent two balls over the outfield fence, batting in seven runs. TinaMarie Callahan earned the win in both games, yielding just five hits and two runs in 10 innings.
Sarah Lawrence travels to York College (N.Y.) on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Padavan-Preller Field. The Gryphons then return home to host Yeshiva University on Tuesday, April 8, at 4 p.m.
