Box Score 2 BELLEROSE, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College softball fell to York College (N.Y.), 16-3 and 12-4, in a nonconference doubleheader at Padavan-Preller Field on Saturday.
Sarah Lawrence (0-10) picked up its first runs off the first two batters of the day. Junior
Tori Himes (Boulder, Colo./New Vista) reached on a walk and stole second base before sophomore
Rebecca Kuntz (Northridge, Calif./Chaminade College Preparatory) notched the day's first hit. A defensive miscue brought both runners to the plate, putting the Gryphons in front 2-0 to start the day.
The Gryphon lead was short-lived, however, as York (2-8) plated three runs in the bottom of the inning. SLC tallied three hits in the next three innings but was held scoreless, while the Cardinals piled on runs to take a 16-2 advantage.
Kuntz led off the top of the fifth inning with a single down the middle, and she worked her way around the bases to close out the scoring with a third and final Gryphon run. From the circle, Kuntz finished the complete game with four strikeouts and no walks on four innings of work.
In game two, both teams were scoreless in the first inning. Sophomore
Lauren Gray (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Waldorf School of Garden City) and rookie
Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) singled in the second inning, but neither runner crossed the plate. York posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 edge.
SLC answered in the top of the third inning. Kuntz singled and HVIAC Rookie of the Week
Mackenzie Gassett (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills Regional) reached on a walk. After two Cardinal errors in as many plays, both runners came home to tie the game, 2-2.
Rookie
Zoe Marks-Rowe (Sacramento, Calif./West Campus) picked up her first career hit, scoring the go-ahead run on the play. Later in the inning, first-year
Sarah Weldon (New York, N.Y./Millennium) recorded her first career RBI, giving the Green and White a 4-2 lead after two and a half innings. Gray and Chafatelli scored runs in the inning.
Once again, York responded to erase the deficit. The Cardinals scored seven runs (three unearned) in the bottom of the third, and after holding the Gryphons without a score in the next inning, York added three more runs in the fourth.
Trailing 12-4, Gryphons Gray and junior
