BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—In the Gryphons' first Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action, Sarah Lawrence College softball fell to Yeshiva University, 16-4 and 11-6 in a pair of five-inning games at Mary LeVine Field on Wednesday.

Yeshiva (4-3, 2-0 HVIAC) started the day with five runs in the opening inning of the first game. In the bottom of the frame, Sarah Lawrence (0-12, 0-1 HVIAC) picked up a small-ball run when senior Mackenzie Gassett (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills Regional) walked and successfully rounded the bases on a fielder's choice, wild pitch and passed ball. Yeshiva kept up the offensive pressure and took an 11-1 advantage in the game.

SLC notched its first hit in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Tori Himes (Boulder, Colo./New Vista) led off the inning with a single off the foot of the Maccabee's pitcher. The Gryphons went on to capitalize on a pair of YU errors and plate three runs in the inning. Sophomore Lauren Gray (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Waldorf School of Garden City) batted Himes home, while hurler Rebecca Somogyi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishiop John Carroll) brought Gray and Gassett home, narrowing the deficit to 11-4.

YU's five runs in the fourth inning spelled doom for the Gryphons. Despite hits by rookie Lara Tshering (Thimphu, Bhutan/The Regent's School Pattaya (Thailand)), Gray and sophomore Rebecca Kuntz (Northridge, Calif./Chaminade College Preparatory), the Green and White were held scoreless, sealing the Maccabee's 16-4 win.

In game two, YU scored a run in the top of the first, but Sarah Lawrence responded enthusiastically in the bottom. Himes led off the game with a single and stole second base. After Kuntz reached on an error, Gassett hit her second triple of the season, and Gray also notched an RBI-hit.

With SLC on top, 3-1, both teams were dismissed in order in the second inning. With the sun creeping toward the horizon, YU regained momentum in the third inning, scoring seven runs off four hits and two Gryphon blunders.

The Green and White answered with two runs in the bottom of the third, making it an 8-5 ballgame. Gray had another RBI single, while first-year Sarah Weldon (New York, N.Y./Millennium) batted classmate Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) home. Rookie Jocilyn Pak (Englewood Cliffs, N.J./Bergen Technical) recorded her first collegiate hit in the inning.

The fourth inning started with Yeshiva's first three batters hitting for seven bases and three runs. The bottom of the fourth saw junior Hayley Adams (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy) take first base on balls before Gassett batted her around on a single to left center, making the score 10-6.

Yeshiva rounded out the scoring with one run in the fifth inning. After the Gryphons were held without a hit in the bottom, the game was called at 11-6 due to darkness.

On the day, Gassett hit 2-for-4 from the plate with a triple, two walks, three runs and two runs batted in. Gray finished 3-for-6 plus a run and three more batted in. Himes also had a stellar day with a pair of hits, two runs and a walk.

From the circle, Somogyi tossed a complete game one with five strikeouts. Kuntz tossed game two with four strikeouts while giving up just one walk and two earned runs.

Sarah Lawrence continues its homestand with a doubleheader against Lehman College on Friday at 3:30/5:30 p.m.
