BRONX, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College women's cross country began its fall at the 2014 Baruch College Invitational at Van Courtlandt Park on Sunday. The Gryphons placed 10th place in the overall team standings.
Two SLC runners cracked the top 20 in a field of 85 runners. In her first collegiate race, rookie
Katherine Shepard (Visalia, Calif./Mount Whitney) completed the 6K (3.7 mile) course in 29:00, good for 13th place overall and seventh among first-year students.
Senior
Elizabeth Emery (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) finished in 20th place, sneaking under the 30-minute barrier with a time of 29:56.
First year
Marisa Acosta (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) made her collegiate debut with a time of 36:32, while sophomore
Melissa Molina (Union, N.J./Union) returned to the trail with a run of 37:37.
Rookies
Georgia Cohen (New York, N.Y./UNC School of the Arts) and
Danielle Dyen-Shapiro (Estero, Fla./Cypress Lake) also competed in their first collegiate race, posting times of 42:31 and 49:05, respectively.
Head Coach
Erin Pomykala was pleased with her team's first race of the year. "On a day made for racing, both the men and women fought through the hills of Van Courtlandt. I am really proud of the hard work that the teams put out on the course today… Our team never quit. We look forward to getting stronger together and to running in our next race."
Up next, Sarah Lawrence cross country travels to the Keystone State for the Mule/Falcon Invitational, hosted by Muhlenberg College and Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa., on Saturday.
