Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.–Action continued at the Snowbird Softball event on Tuesday, when Sarah Lawrence College softball fell to Albright College, 21-0, before being edged by Southern Vermont College, 9-6, at Grand Park.
Against Albright (3-0), rookie
Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) singled through the left side in the first inning, while sophomore
Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) doubled in the fourth inning. The Lions ran away with the game with eight runs in the first inning and 13 runs in the fourth. Sarah Lawrence (0-4) kept Albright from scoring in the second or fourth inning, allowing just one hit in those two frames.
Rookie
Kamaron McNair (Lawrenceville, N.J./The Hun School) had a strikeout in the loss, while Albright's Riley Gerenda earned the win on 11 strikeouts without a walk.
Against Southern Vermont (2-2), the Gryphons fared better. In the first inning, Vuyovich hit her fourth double in as many games, and both she and Chafatelli came home on an RBI-hit by McNair.
Leading 2-0, SLC added another pair of runs in the third inning. Junior
Rebecca Somogyi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishiop John Carroll) hit an RBI-single to left center field, scoring Chafatelli on her second run of the game. Somogyi then drew a throw to second base on a steal attempt, allowing Vuyovich to sneak home from third base to extend the lead to 4-0.
Southern Vermont stormed back in the bottom of the third, when the Mountaineers brought five batters around the bases on just two hits. SVC added two runs in the fourth inning, making it a 7-4 ballgame.
Junior
Quiana Jones (Washington, D.C./Maret School) reached first base in the fifth inning, and first year
Eleni Spentzouris (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) brought her home on a hit to right field. Later in the frame, rookie
Em Hammett (Columbus, Ohio/The Wellington School) also batted in a run, narrowing the deficit to one run, 7-6.
The Mountaineers added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and 1.5 hitless frames later, SVC walked away with the victory.
McNair threw four innings with three strikeouts for the Gryphons; Somogyi threw two innings. SVC's Kirstin Buchan earned the win with an inning of relief work, while starter Emily Fleming picked up the save by tossing six innings with four strikeouts.
Sarah Lawrence takes on Arcadia College and Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday.
