Softball Faces Lehman, Vuyovich Sets Doubles Record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRONX, N.Y.-In the Gryphons' first games since returning from their Spring Break roadtrip, Sarah Lawrence College was defeated by Lehman College, 21-13 and 8-7, in a non-conference doubleheader at South Field on Wednesday. Rookie Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) highlighted the day by hitting a pair of doubles to take over as SLC's career doubles leader.

In game one, Sarah Lawrence (0-10) scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Vuyovich hit an RBI-double to score the first run, while classmate Kamaron McNair (Lawrenceville, N.J./The Hun School) followed with a two-RBI hit. First year Eleni Spentzouris (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) batted in the final run of the frame.

After dismissing Lehman (4-3) in the first, the Gryphons extended their lead in the second inning. Senior Tori Himes (Boulder, Colo./New Vista) started the scoring by batting in her first run of the season. Next at the plate, Vuyovich blasted a two-RBI double, becoming the program's career doubles leader in the process. McNair also batted in a run in the inning, and sophomore Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) rounded out the scoring with a sacrifice fly to put SLC in front, 9-0.

Lehman scored twice in the bottom of the second. Vuyovich batted in a run in the top of the third, while three other Gryphons were stranded, making it a 10-2 ballgame. The Lightning stormed back, scoring the next 11 runs, while holding SLC scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the top of the sixth, McNair notched her fourth RBI of the game. Chafatelli and senior Hayley Adams (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy) also batted in runs, tying the game at 13-13. Lehman clinched victory by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the frame, halting the game at 21-13.

With four runs batted in each, McNair and Vuyovich tied for the second-highest total in a game by any Gryphon. Pitching a complete game, junior Rebecca Somogyi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishiop John Carroll) had four strikeouts.

Lehman was first on the scoreboard in game two, scoring a lone run in the bottom of the first inning. The Lightning added three more runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 advantage.

In the third inning, rookie Em Hammett (Columbus, Ohio/The Wellington School) put an RBI-hit into right field to score the Gryphons' first run of the game. Vuyovich hit an RBI-single later in the inning to narrow the gap to 4-2.

Chafatelli and sophomore Jocilyn Pak (Englewood Cliffs, N.J./Bergen Technical) each had hits early in the fourth inning. Chafatelli was eventually forced out at home, but Pak crossed the plate safely to score. Lehman opened up a 7-3 lead by the end of the inning.

Vuyovich singled to lead off the fifth inning, and McNair brought her home with a single to center field. McNair scored when she and Chafatelli successfully executed a double steal, and Spentzouris batted in a third run in the frame. The Gryphon defense dismissed six straight batters in the fifth and sixth innings. Thanks to a game-tying RBI-hit by McNair, the teams were tied entering the seventh.

SLC put two runners on base in the top of the seventh but was unable to break the tie. In the end, a walk-off single gave Lehman the ultimate edge.

Chafatelli stole three bases in game two, one shy of the SLC program record. McNair pitched seven strikeouts and yielded just three earned runs in a complete game of work from the circle.

On the day, Vuyovich went a perfect 6-for-6 from the plate adding a walk and a hit-by-pitch; she batted in five runs and crossed the plate four times. McNair finished the day with three runs, batting in six others.

Up next, Sarah Lawrence is scheduled to travel to The Sage Colleges for a Skyline doubleheader on Friday.
