Softball Sweeps Valley Forge

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHOENIXVILLE, Pa.—The Gryphons scored 26 runs over two games, as Sarah Lawrence College softball swept University of Valley Forge, 10-1 and 16-13, in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday.

Sarah Lawrence (3-25) got on the scoreboard in the first inning of the day. Rookie Em Hammett (Columbus, Ohio/The Wellington School) singled to lead off the game and was batted home by classmate Kamaron McNair (Lawrenceville, N.J./The Hun School).

The Gryphons were held scoreless in the second inning but added another run in the third. McNair reached first base on a Patriot error and was batted home by sophomore Jocilyn Pak (Englewood Cliffs, N.J./Bergen Technical).

SLC broke the game open in the fourth inning, starting with junior Sam Amberchan (Alameda, Calif./Menlo-Atherton), Hammett and sophomore Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) loading the bases for the Gryphons. Rookie Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) brought in two runners with a double, and McNair followed with a double to score two more. Senior Tori Himes (Boulder, Colo./New Vista) hit a third-straight double to score McNair, and Pak batted in her second run of the game, giving SLC an 8-0 advantage.

Valley Forge (5-17) scored its only run of the game off of a lone hit in the bottom of the fifth.

SLC tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning, brought home by Himes and an RBI-single from rookie Isabel Lamont (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames).

McNair struck out three batters in the game, allowing only three hits and two walks. For UVF, Rachel Daniels had one strikeout.

In game two, SLC again scored in the opening inning. McNair hit her second double of the day to bring Chafatelli to the plate for a 1-0 edge. UVF responded in the bottom of the frame to tie the score, 1-1, and neither team scored in the second inning.

Rookie Quiana Jones (Washington, D.C./Maret School) led off the third inning with her first career hit. Hammett and Chafatelli also singled, loading the bases. Vuyovich followed with her 15th double of the season, scoring two runs to retake the lead. Himes also had an RBI-single, and Pak brought two more runs to the plate with her single, extending the lead to 6-1.

Valley Forge capitalized on six hits and four Gryphon errors to score six runs in the bottom of the third, taking the Patriots' first lead of the day, 7-6.

SLC bounced back in the fourth inning when the first three Gryphons reached base. With two outs, senior Hayley Adams (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy) drew an RBI-walk to tie the score. A Patriot miscue allowed Lamont to reach first and Vuoyvich to score. Then, Pak notched an RBI hit to bring a third SLC runner across the plate for a 9-7 lead.
UVF halved the deficit with a run in the bottom of the fourth.

The Green and White kept the momentum going in the fifth inning. Two singles and an error loaded the bases for Himes, who drew a walk to score Chafatelli. Adams batted in a run, and Pak batted in a career-high fourth run in the game, making the score 12-8.

Valley Forge took advantage of Gryphon defensive mistakes and plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

Leading 12-10, Sarah Lawrence put Hammett and Chafatelli on base to start the sixth. Vuyovich hit her first career triple to score both runners, and McNair followed with a sacrifice fly to score a third run. Following a double by Himes, Adams notched an RBI-single, extending the lead to 16-10.

The Patriots kept the game interesting by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth. In the final inning, both defenses excelled. Both sides were dismissed in order, icing the final score at 16-13 in favor of SLC.

McNair gave up nine earned runs but struck out three batters in game two. Daniels had three strikeouts but was dealt her second loss of the day.

Sarah Lawrence plays its final regular-season games at College of New Rochelle on Wednesday. The Gryphons are then slated to participate in the 2015 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Invitational at Flowers Park on Sunday, May 3.
