BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming won seven events as the Gryphons opened the 2016-17 season with a non-scoring meet against a squad from nationally-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology at Campbell Sports Center on Saturday.

In the day's highlight performance, Sarah Lawrence opened the season with a new school record in the team's first race. Sophomore

Hannah Lawson (Portland, Ore./Pacific Crest Community School), rookie
Naima Joy Mackrel (Woodstock, N.Y./Kingston) and senior
Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) won the 200 yard medley relay in 1:57.61. The time was a half-second faster than the team's previous record set two seasons prior. Senior
Elizabeth Kroll (Sacramento, Calif./The Met Sacramento), rookie
Sarah Blanche Klein (Locust, N.J./Ranney School), senior
Gabrielle Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett) and junior
Leah Myrtil (Boston, Mass./Elizabeth Seton Academy) combined to complete the event in 2:13.42, good for fourth place.
In the 400 freestyle relay, Lawson, Peal, Mackrel and Quirk placed runners-up in 3:59.67. Risica, Kroll, Myrtil and rookie
Kaitie Dilan (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) placed fourth with a time of 4:31.36. Senior
Sky Mihaylo (Albany, Ore./West Albany), senior
Lydia Mullan (Winchester, Mass./Winchester), junior
Rachel Barkowitz (Fleming Island, Fla./Dedham (Mass.)), and Klein were fifth in 4:55.60.
TOP GRYPHONS
Mackrel won all three of her individual races in her collegiate debut. The first year won the 100 backstroke (1:02.12), 50 freestyle (26.29) and 100 butterfly (1:05.57). Lawson also won both of her individual events with a first-place swim in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.53) and 200 breaststroke (2:35.10). Peal also picked up a win, placing first among women in the 200 butterfly (2:31.76), adding a third place in the 200 freestyle (2:10.98).
Quirk had a pair of runner-up swims in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.88) and 200 breaststroke (2:56.40); she placed third in the 100 freestyle (1:01.54). Barkowitz was second place in the 200 individual medley (2:54.20) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:26.08). Risica had a pair of third-place swims with her performances in the 100 backstroke (1:08.62) and 50 freestyle (28.36), while Klein placed third in both the 200 breaststroke (3:04.75) and 200 individual medley (2:57.26).
NOTABLE SWIMS
Kroll placed fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:12.59), while Mullan was fourth in both the 200 butterfly (3:07.50) and 100 butterfly (1:19.41). Myrtil took fourth in the 50 freestyle (29.68), fifth in the 100 freestyle (1:12.36) and sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:39.06). In her lone individual race, Dilan placed fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:37.11). Mihaylo finished seventh in the 200 freestyle (2:41.13).
