Day 1 Preliminaries | Day 1 Finals

ITHACA, N.Y.—Two Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming records were broken on day one of the 2016 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, hosted by Ithaca College on Wednesday. Action continues through Saturday at the Ithaca Athletics & Events Center Aquatics Pavilion.

IN SHORT
After day 1, SLC ranks 14th of 15 teams with 32 points. The host Bombers lead the field with 255.5 points.

LAWSON BREAKS 200 IM RECORD
Sophomore Hannah Lawson (Portland, Ore./Pacific Crest Community School) began the day by breaking her own SLC record in qualifying heats of the 200 yard individual medley. Lawson touched the wall in 2:17.13, taking a full second off her previous best and qualifying for the C Final in 20th position. In the evening's finals, Lawson improved her time to 2:14.85, jumping to 19th place overall.

GRYPHON RELAY
The Gryphons picked up 26 team points with a 14th-place swim in the 200 yard medley relay. Rookie Devon Peal (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) led off, followed by Lawson, senior Sam Amberchan (Alameda, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) and junior Gabby Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett). The team completed the event in a season-best time of 1:58.37, missing the team record by less than a quarter of a second.

PEAL BREAKS 500 FREE RECORD
Though she did not qualify for Wednesday evening's finals, Peal stamped her name in the SLC record book by breaking the team's 500 freestyle mark for the third time this season. The rookie lowered her own team record by 5.58 seconds to 5:31.74. Peal finished in 25th place, missing a spot in the finals by 2.06 seconds.
