Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) won his third UNYSCSA title in the 100 butterfly, and three team records were broken as Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming competed on day two of the 2016 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, hosted by Ithaca College on Thursday. Action continues through Saturday at the Ithaca Athletics & Events Center Aquatics Pavilion.
IN SHORTAfter day two's events, the Gryphons moved up one spot to a tie for 12th place overall (135 points). Stevens Institute of Technology retained control of first place with 765 points.
MARTINEZ SWIMS TO BUTTERFLY VICTORYIn the 100 yard butterfly, Martinez was the only swimmer to break the 50-second barrier, qualifying for the evening finals as the top seed in 49.97 seconds. The two-time defending champion in the event, the senior Gryphon returned to the pool and won the event in 50.03 seconds, winning by a margin of more than half a second. Combined with two titles and a sixth-place finish in 2013, Martinez has placed among the top 10 in all four of his years at the meet, a feat he also accomplished in Wednesday's 200 individual medley.
200 FREE RELAYDuring the preliminaries, the SLC men broke their first team relay record of the meet. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, Martinez teamed with rookies
Anthony Lee (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island),
Dawa Lama (New York, N.Y./The Beacon School) and
Jack Langland (Ottumwa, Iowa/Ottumwa) to break the Green and White record by two seconds with a time of 1:32.95. The same foursome returned to the evening's finals and placed 12th while improving their performance to 1:32.21. In addition, Lee swam a personal-best 22.33 in the event, missing the SLC record by 0.04 second.
400 MEDLEY RELAY & BACKSTROKE RECORDIn Thursday's final event, the Gryphons returned to form with a successful swim in the 400 yard medley relay. During the preliminaries, Martinez, Lama, Lee and Langland broke the SLC team record with a combined effort of 3:51.84. In addition, Martinez broke his own 100 yard backstroke record with a lead-off split of 56.00 seconds. During the finals, the Green and White squad lowered their record to 3:49.53 and captured 15th place in the event.
