Softball Rally Falls Short at Purchase

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PURCHASE, N.Y.—The Gryphons rallied to tie game one in the seventh inning, but Sarah Lawrence College softball was defeated by Purchase College in both games of a Skyline doubleheader at PC Field on Friday.

IN SHORT
Purchase def. Sarah Lawrence, 4-3.
Purchase (12-2, 4-2 Skyline) def. Sarah Lawrence (6-13, 1-7 Skyline), 7-1 (6 inn.) [darkness].

GAME ONE
In game one, SLC was held to two hits in the first four innings, but on defense the Green and White stonewalled the Panthers, leading to no score through four.

Rookie Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) singled in the first at-bat of the game, and sophomore Kamaron McNair (Lawrenceville, N.J./The Hun School) hit a single to lead off the fourth. In the circle, McNair led a stalwart defense that allowed just two Panther baserunners during the same innings. The fourth inning was highlighted by a Gryphon double play when McNair swiped a line drive from the air and tossed to rookie Olivia Henry (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) for the second out.

In the fifth inning, junior Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) hit an infield single, and Penna moved her to third base with a hit of her own; both Gryphons were stranded. In the home half, Purchase homered and scored a second run following a walk and a triple, giving the Panthers a 2-0 edge.

SLC was dismissed in order in the sixth, and Purchase added a third run to the board, 3-0.

In a must-score situation, the Gryphons came through in the clutch. Rookie Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) led off the seventh inning with a walk, and sophomore Em Hammett (Columbus, Ohio/The Wellington School) followed with a single. The momentum was cutoff when a PC double play left SLC with two outs and one runner on base. Chafatelli reached first base with her second hit of the game, and Penna followed with her third hit, a 2-RBI double to left field. Sophomore Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) followed with another double, scoring the tying run and giving SLC new life, 3-3.

In the end, PC used small ball tactics to end the game. Back-to-back singles put two Panthers aboard, and back-to-back bunts brought home the game-winning run, 4-3.

McNair finished the complete game, allowing nine hits over six innings. Penna finished 3 for 4 from the plate, while Chafatelli went 2 for 2. PC's Samantha Alonzo had seven strikeouts in the win, helping herself with her first home run of the season.

GAME TWO
The SLC bats were stymied in game two. McNair singled in the first inning, and Vuyovich hit a single in the third for the only two Gryphon hits of the first four innings. Meanwhile, Purchase racked up a six-run advantage by the start of the fifth.

In the top of the fifth inning, rookie Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) had her first hit of the day, a double to right field. Hammett recorded her second hit of the series, bringing home Petit with a single to the same spot. The lone Gryphon run would be SLC's only of the game, and the 7-1 contest was brought to a halt in the middle of the sixth inning as darkness inundated the field.

Cunningham was handed the game two loss despite allowing only one earned run. Vuyovich notched a strikeout in an inning of relief, and McNair finished up the game, striking out one Panther while pitching eight outs.

PC's Nicole Fortuna improved to 7-0 on the season, giving up one run and four hits in six innings.
