NORFOLK, Va.—The Sarah Lawrence College women's and men's swimming teams were among those named College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Teams, as announced by the organization on Wednesday. The awards are in recognition of collegiate teams that achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the 2016 Spring Semester.
Sarah Lawrence received special recognition for having the highest GPA among small Division III women's programs (fewer than 22 student-athletes).
"This is a welcome change to the headlines that have dominated intercollegiate athletics in recent weeks," explained CSCAA executive director Joel Shinofield, "In reality, however, this is what we've come to expect in our sport. The hard work and dedication [student-athletes] learn at the pool translates directly to their success in the classroom and beyond regardless of division."
Among Division III schools, Sarah Lawrence's women had the highest average GPA (3.87). Out of more than 400 women's programs recognized, only Division II Nova Southeastern (3.90) posted a higher average. On the men's side, SLC's combined GPA of 3.26 was among the top 50 Division III programs recognized.
The women's program at St. Joseph's College Long Island joined Sarah Lawrence as the only teams in the Skyline Conference to receive the honors.
