PURCHASE, N.Y.—Rookie
Naima Joy Mackrel (Woodstock, N.Y./Kingston) and junior
Hannah Lawson (Portland, Ore./Pacific Crest Community School) both captured conference titles to lead Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming on day one of the 2017 Skyline Championships, hosted by Purchase College on Friday. Both Gryphons' championships were the first of their careers, while Mackrel also set a new Skyline meet record with her winning swim. At the midpoint of the weekend, the Gryphons stood in third place overall.

MACKREL'S MEET RECORD
In her first year, Mackrel gave the Gryphons their second victory and first-ever Skyline Championship meet record in the team's third year in the league. In the 100 yard backstroke, the rookie touched the wall in 1:00.55, surpassing the league's previous best by two seconds. Mackrel's other individual event saw the rookie swim to third place in the 50 yard freestyle in 25.65 seconds.
LAWSON SWIMS TO BREASTSTROKE TITLE
Lawson garnered her first Skyline title with her triumph in the 100 yard breaststroke. The junior Gryphon came back from a 0.33 deficit at the midpoint of the race and beat out her opponents by half a second with her time of 1:07.77. In her other individual event, Lawson placed second in the 200 yard freestyle, completing the race in 2:01.42.
RECORD-BREAKING RELAY
The Gryphons broke one Sarah Lawrence record in Friday's action, setting a new team best in the 200 yard medley relay. Sophomore
Devon Peal (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) joined Lawson, senior
Gabrielle Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett) and Mackrel to combine for an effort of 1:52.20. The swim earned the team second place overall and surpassed the squad's previous best by 2.77 seconds.
KEY PERFORMANCES
Peal completed the 1000 yard freestyle in a time of 11:42.32, good for fourth place overall. The sophomore Gryphon also captured fourth place in the 100 backstroke, clocking in at 1:02.82.
Risica scored for the Gryphons with her swim in the 100 backstroke. Her time of 1:06.28 was good for seventh place and seven team points. In the same event, junior
Elizabeth Kroll (Sacramento, Calif./The Met Sacramento) took 11th place in 1:10.21. Classmate
Leah Myrtil (Boston, Mass./Elizabeth Seton Academy) rounded out the scoring places in 12th, setting a career best of 1:10.31. Risica's day also included a 12th-place finish in the 50 freestyle (27.49).

Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) took seventh place in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:17.32.
Senior
Lydia Mullan (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) gave the Gryphons a seventh-place effort in the 200 yard butterfly, breaking the three-minute mark for the first time in her career, 2:59.97. Close behind, rookie
