PISCATAWAY, N.J.—Two more records were broken, and junior
Hannah Lawson (Portland, Ore./Pacific Crest Community School) earned her first conference title, as Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming concluded the 2017 Metropolitan Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference Championships, hosted by Rutgers University at RU Aquatic Center on Sunday.
IN SHORT
Sarah Lawrence – 349 points – 11th of 16 teams
LAWSON'S CONFERENCE TITLE
In the Gryphons' inaugural appearance at the Metropolitan Championships, Lawson emerged as the league's top swimmer in the 200 yard breaststroke. In the preliminaries, she posted a time of 2:23.38 to qualify for the championship final as the No. 2 seed. The evening's final saw the junior Gryphon improve to 2:20.82, winning the event by a margin of more than one second. The effort surpassed the NCAA Division III Championships "B Cut" time, and only the meet's top two swimmers achieved the standard.
PEAL SHINES IN 1650 AND BACKSTROKE
Junior
Devon Peal (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) became the Gryphons' only swimmer to place in two events of the same day, competing in the 1650 yard freestyle and 200 yard backstroke on Sunday. Her first swim of the day was in the mile finals in which she swam a time of 19:07.33. The performance was 10 seconds faster than her previous season best and surpassed her own Sarah Lawrence record in the event by four seconds. Peal placed 14th overall in the event.
In the morning's preliminaries Peal swam a career-best in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:10.89. The time was more than four seconds faster than her previous best and earned her a spot in Sunday evening's championship. Peal touched the wall in 2:11.89, and though she was last in her heat, she still collected points for eighth place and became the team's third swimmer to earn All-Conference accolades.
GRYPHONS RELAY RECORD
The Gryphons broke their fourth relay record of the weekend in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The day's final event saw rookie
Naima Joy Mackrel (Woodstock, N.Y./Kingston) swim a personal best 54.81 over the opening 100 yards. She was followed by senior
Gabrielle Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett), Peal and Lawson, completing the event in 3:43.93, a 2.57 second improvement over the team's previous record. The quartet won the consolation final and earned ninth place overall.
PLACE WINNERS
Two other team members scored points with individual swims. In the final event of her career, senior
Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) posted a career-best 2:44.77 in the preliminaries of the 200 yard breaststroke. On Sunday evening, she improved her time in her last collegiate swim, touching the wall in 2:43.29. She placed fifth in the bonus consolation, earning points for 21st place.
Similarly, Risica shone in her final individual event. In the 200 yard backstroke, the Gryphon swam a career-best 2:22.36 in the preliminaries. The time slotted her 25th as the top swimmer to miss out on the finals; however, a remarkable scratch by a swimmer from U.S. Merchant Marine left a vacancy in the bonus final and one more attempt for the senior. Risica lowered her career-best to 2:21.80 and finished 24th overall.
