Box Score 2 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—Sarah Lawrence College softball commenced the 2017 season with a pair of non-conference games facing Lycoming College and Franciscan University of Steubenville at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex on Monday.
IN SHORT
Lycoming (1-0) def. Sarah Lawrence, 11-4.
Franciscan (1-1) def. Sarah Lawrence (0-2), 6-3.
AGAINST LYCOMING
In Sarah Lawrence's first turn at bat, the first four Gryphons reached first base on balls with sophomore
Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) leading the way and rookie
Mackenzie Mindish (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) getting an RBI with her free pass. Junior
Kamaron McNair (Lawrence Township, N.J./The Hun School) had the first statistical at-bat of the season, driving home a run with a shot to left field. Junior
Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest) followed with an outfield single, and Mindish came home on a Lycoming error. McNair also came home on a miscue, and the Gryphons carried a 4-1 advantage out of the first inning.
From there, Lycoming's battery recovered from the early pitching mistakes and held the Gryphons' offense to four hits in the rest of the game. Sophomore
Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) doubled in the second inning and later had a hit in the fifth inning, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a run. Senior
Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) singled to lead off the seventh inning, and Penna doubled in the final frame.
In the circle, rookie
Karissa McAuley (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie) tossed five innings in her first collegiate game, striking out three Warriors. Sophomore
Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) fanned one in her two innings of work.
AGAINST FRANCISCAN
In the day's second game, Penna led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple to right field and went on to score on a wild pitch, tying the game 1-1. Shapiro hit her first extra-base hit of the season in the second inning, and Petit notched a hit in the third.
The Gryphons tallied three hits in the fourth inning but were unable to capitalize with any runs; Mindish, Shapiro and Cunningham loaded the bags yet were left stranded.
After Franciscan began to pull away, Sarah Lawrence notched a second run in the fifth inning when Penna again led off with a triple. Petit followed with an RBI-double, cutting the deficit to 6-2.
The Green and White scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Chafatelli reached on a blunder by the Lady Monks and was eventually batted home by McAuley.
Cunningham started the game on the rubber, throwing four innings with one strikeout. McAuley finished the contest with three scoreless innings and one strikeout.
IN THE RECORD BOOK
Penna tied the SLC team record with her two triples in the game. The only other Gryphon to achieve the feat was
Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), who hit a pair of three-baggers against Albright exactly one year earlier on March 13, 2016.
