Softball Prevails over Rutgers-Camden, 3-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—Pitcher Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) had another gem performance, throwing seven innings without an earned run to lift Sarah Lawrence College softball to a 3-1 victory over Rutgers University-Camden in non-conference action at North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex on Wednesday. In the team's second game, SLC fell to SUNY Canton in a 3-2 nail biter.

IN SHORT
Sarah Lawrence defeated Rutgers-Camden (4-5), 3-1.
SUNY Canton (2-1) defeated Sarah Lawrence (2-4), 3-2.

AGAINST RUTGERS-CAMDEN
The Scarlet Raptors held SLC to three hits through the first four innings. In the second frame, Cunningham doubled to right field and rookie Mackenzie Mindish (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) followed with a single, yet the Gryphons were unable to capitalize. First year Karissa McAuley (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie) singled in the fourth inning.

Aside from an unearned RUC run in the second inning, the Green and White defense showcased a strong effort in the game. In the third inning, sophomores Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) and Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) worked to retire a Scarlet Knight trying to make a break for home.

Trailing 1-0 after four innings, Sarah Lawrence brought the bats to life in the top of the fifth. Rookie Kelsey Copley (West Jefferson, Ohio/West Jefferson) led off with a single to left field and made it to second with a stolen base. Senior Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) succeeded with a sacrifice to move the tying run to third base, and Copley came home on a throwing error to tie the game 1-1.

Penna scored Chafatelli and recorded her third double of the season with a shot to left field; she eventually came home on a double-steal attempt to add an insurance run, 3-1.

Junior Kamaron McNair (Lawrence Township, N.J./The Hun School) recorded the Gryphons' sixth hit of the game, sending a shot to left-center field in the sixth.

In the field, the Gryphons yielded a hit in each of the fifth and sixth innings but recorded an out on each of the final six Rutgers batters, closing out the 3-1 victory.

Cunningham finished the game having given up just five hits and an unearned run in seven innings in the circle; she struck out two Scarlet Knights to earn her second win of the season.

AGAINST SUNY CANTON
The bottom of the lineup made an impact for the Gryphons in their second game of the day. After the Roos scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning, SLC responded in the top of the third.

Mindish doubled to right-center field to start the third frame. Copley advanced the lead runner to third base, and Mindish beat out a throw following contact by Chafatelli. Through four innings, the score remained tied, 1-1.

In the fifth, Copley and Chafatelli strung together a pair of hits to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Junior Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest) came through with her first hit of the day, sending the ball into right field to score Chafatelli for a 2-1 edge.

SUNY Canton regained momentum and scored in the bottom of the fifth. The Gryphons went down in order in the sixth, and the Kangaroos scored the eventual game winner in the bottom. Mindish had her second hit of the game in the seventh, but SLC was unable to erase the deficit.

McNair struck out two batters in her second start of the season. McAuley took over in relief and pitched three innings of work.
