Two Gryphons Homer in Softball's 17-Inning Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Despite home runs by rookie Kelsey Copley (West Jefferson, Ohio/West Jefferson) and sophomore Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore), Sarah Lawrence College softball fell to Skyline rival Purchase College in a pair of league games at Mary LeVine Field on Wednesday. The Gryphons played the longest game in team history with a 10-inning marathon in game one.

IN SHORT
Purchase defeated Sarah Lawrence, 4-3 [10 innings].
Purchase (5-9, 5-5 Skyline) def. Sarah Lawrence (5-19, 2-13 Skyline), 6-3.

GAME ONE
Rookie Mackenzie Mindish (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) hit the Gryphons' first single of the game, sending a shot down the left line in the first inning. Fellow first year Karissa McAuley (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie) singled to center field in the frame, yet no Gryphons scored.

The silence was broken in the second inning after junior Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest) capitalized on a pair of Purchase errors to round the bases and score the day's first run.

Purchase notched three hits in the first two innings, while both sides were dismissed in order in both the third and fourth frames.

Leading 1-0, Sarah Lawrence used a double play to end the top of the fifth. Sophomore shortstop Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) fielded a grounder and touched second base before throwing to junior Kamaron McNair (Lawrence Township, N.J./The Hun School) to complete the play at first base.

In the bottom of the fifth, rookie Copley launched a fly ball down the left field line for her first collegiate home run. After six innings, the Gryphons retained their 2-0 advantage.

Purchase did damage in the top of the seventh, using three hits to score a pair of runs and level the game, 2-2.

The Green and White loaded the bags in the bottom of the seventh in part thanks to back-to-back hits by sophomore Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) and Copley. Penna loaded the bags with a walk, but the Gryphons were unable to break the tie, sending the game to extra innings.

In the eighth and ninth innings, neither team advanced a runner past second base. Sophomore catcher Petit gunned down a Panther trying to steal third base in the eighth inning, and McNair and senior Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) were both stranded after singles.

The international tiebreaker rule went into effect in the 10th inning, entitling each team to a runner at second base to start their turn at the plate. Purchase's lead-off batter singled, and the Panthers scored a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly and an errant throw.

Penna started the bottom of the 10th on the second bag and came home on a pair of ground balls. PC dismissed the final three Gryphons in order and came away with the 4-3 win in the longest game in Sarah Lawrence softball history.

McAuley struck out two batters and yielded one run in six innings of work. Cunningham had four strikeouts and just one earned run in four innings. At the plate, Copley was the only Gryphon with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 including her homer.

GAME TWO
Purchase scored two runs in the first inning but the Gryphons got one back in the bottom of the frame. Petit smacked her first collegiate home run over the left field fence to halve the deficit, 2-1.

PC increased the lead to 5-1 after an inning and a half, and both sides struggled with fading light in a race to finish the game.

McNair doubled down the right field line to start the bottom of the second, and Shapiro singled in the stanza as both runners were stranded.

The Sarah Lawrence bats were on fire in the third innings, as the Gryphons strung together four straight hits. Mindish started the rally and scored, while Petit singled and also came around. McAuley and McNair each singled through the left side gap, and both McNair and Shapiro batted in runs. After three innings, PC still led, 5-3.

Purchase scored what would be the day's final run in the fourth inning, and the Gryphons went hitless over the final four innings.

In the seventh, Sarah Lawrence loaded the bases on a Penna walk and a pair of errors. In the end, Purchase fought off the charge and completed the doubleheader sweep.

Three different pitchers took the circle for Sarah Lawrence. Both Cunningham and McAuley notched a strikeout, while the latter yielded one earned run in 5.1 innings pitched.

Petit finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs and her first home run of her collegiate career; McNair went 2-for-4 with an RBI single.
