Kelsey Copley (West Jefferson, Ohio/West Jefferson) hit a 2-RBI walk-off single in game one, and both teams dueled to a shutout tie in game two, as Sarah Lawrence College softball faced John Jay College in a non-conference doubleheader at Mary LeVine Field on Thursday.
IN SHORT
Sarah Lawrence defeated John Jay, 7-6.
John Jay (3-16-1) tied Sarah Lawrence (6-19-1), 0-0 [6 innings].
SENIOR DAY
Before the game, senior
Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) was honored for her dedication and contributions to the Gryphons softball program. As a four year player, she has played more games than any other player in team history. She is a two-time Skyline Academic Honor Roll player and is concentrating in international relations and Russian.
GAME ONE
John Jay started the day with an unearned run in the first inning of game one. In the bottom of the frame, sophomore
Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) led off with a perfectly placed bunt before classmate
Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) notched her first hit of the day. Rookie
Karissa McAuley (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie) singled down the left line to score both her teammates and give the Gryphons a 2-1 edge.
John Jay stole back the lead on two runs in the second inning. In the bottom of the frame, Copley reached base and Chafatelli hit an RBI double to left field, tying the game at 2-2.
In the third, the Bulldogs retook the advantage with another unearned run. Petit and junior
Kamaron McNair (Lawrence Township, N.J./The Hun School) both singled in the bottom of the stanza, yet the two were unable to equalize the score.
Sophomore
Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) took over in the circle in the fourth inning and sat down the Bulldogs in order.
In the bottom of the fourth, Chafatelli celebrated senior day in a big way by smacking a ball just over the left field fence for her first home run of the season and third of her career. Junior
Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest) singled later in the inning, and after four innings, the game was tied again, 4-4.
John Jay scored another run in the fifth inning and was threatening to score another. With two outs and a runner on third, Cunningham struck out the batter, and the Gryphons turned a double play on a relay to McNair at first base and back to Petit at the plate.
In the bottom of the sixth, Cunningham reached and moved to second on a Copley sacrifice. Chafatelli recorded her third hit of the game with a shot through the right side, and Cunningham made the sprint home from second base to tie the game again, 5-5.
The Gryphons escaped with the bases loaded in the seventh inning but not before John Jay plated another run to go ahead, 6-5.
Needing a run to stay alive, McAuley led off the seventh with a single, and rookie
Mackenzie Mindish (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) also reached base. Cunningham kept the line moving with a single up the middle to load the bases. Copley came to the plate with one out, and on a 1-1 count, she blasted a ball down the left line that scored two Gryphons for the team's first walk-off win of the season, 7-6.
Chafatelli finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, including her solo home run. Penna (2-for-4), Petit (2-for-4), and McAuley (2-for-4) all finished with multiple hits. McAuley had one strikeout against two earned runs in her three-inning start; Cunningham picked up her fifth win of the season with three strikeouts in four innings.
GAME TWO
Both teams' bats went silent in game two. Petit notched the Gryphons' only hit with a first-inning double that clanged off the center-field fence. The Green and White loaded the bags in the fourth inning with three bases on balls, yet no runners came across the plate.
On defense, McNair threw three innings before John Jay picked up a hit in the fourth inning. The Bulldogs had another hit in the sixth, as the Gryphons allowed seven base runners to reach first base yet preserved the shutout.
With light fading fast through the final innings, the ultimate winner of the game was the advancing darkness. The game was called for darkness in the sixth inning, leaving both teams with a rare and unsatisfying tie in their records.
UP NEXT
Sarah Lawrence returns to action on Saturday, April 22, when the team travels to The Sage Colleges. The Gryphons are slated to return to their home field one more time. The team has added a makeup series against Lehman, scheduled for April 26.
