Box Score 2 BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Despite forcing an extra inning in game two, Sarah Lawrence College softball was swept by Farmingdale State College in a Skyline doubleheader at Mary LeVine Field on Sunday.
IN SHORT
Farmingdale State defeated Sarah Lawrence, 5-2.
Farmingdale State (9-9, 4-2 Skyline) defeated Sarah Lawrence (5-13, 2-6 Skyline), 9-5 [8 innings].
GAME ONE
Farmingdale State scored the day's first run in the top of the first inning of game one. With a runner on third with one out, the Gryphons curtailed the threat when sophomore
Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) fielded a grounder, touched second base and fired to junior
Kamaron McNair (Lawrence Township, N.J./The Hun School) at first base, doubling off the Rams.
Another stellar defensive effort was made in the third inning when sophomore catcher
Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) made a diving grab in foul territory to dismiss the side in order and preserve the 1-0 score.
Penna hit safely in each of her first two plate appearances, including a double to lead off the first inning. Rookie
Karissa McAuley (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie) also hit safely in her first trip to the plate, but the three hits were not enough to plate a run through three innings.
Farmingdale State scored another run in the fourth inning and tacked on three more in the fifth for a 5-0 advantage.
The Gryphons worked the count in the bottom of the fifth inning and generated their first runs of the day. Senior
Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) led off with a walk, and Penna followed with a base on balls. Petit loaded the bags after being hit with a pitch, and McAuley hit an RBI single through the left side for the Gryphons' first run. Rookie
Mackenzie Mindish (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) also wore a pitch to earn an RBI, and the deficit was narrowed to 5-2.
In the circle, reliever McAuley worked out of trouble in the sixth and seven innings to keep the Rams from scoring again.
In the home half of the sixth, rookie
Kelsey Copley (West Jefferson, Ohio/West Jefferson) and Chafatelli both reached base to start the side. Junior
Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest) drew her second walk of the game to load the bases, yet Farmingdale neutralized the threat and clinched the win in game one.
Sophomore
Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) was dealt the loss after giving up the game's first run. McAuley pitched six innings of relief and struck out four batters.
From the plate, the Gryphons four hits were recorded by Penna (2-for-3) and McAuley (2-for-4).
GAME TWO
The Gryphons took the early momentum in game two, keeping the Rams hitless through the first two innings.
In the bottom of the first, Penna capitalized on a Farmingdale mistake and then stole second base before coming home on another defensive blunder. Petit rounded the bases as well, taking advantage of a single by McNair and an RBI hit from McAuley. Cunningham also recorded her first hit of the day as the Gryphons went ahead 2-0.
In the second inning, Penna singled and extended the lead to 3-0, this time coming home on a shot up the middle by Petit.
Farmingdale took two runs back in the third inning, and despite a hit from Mindish in the bottom of the stanza, the score remained 3-2 through three.
The Rams went ahead for the first time in the game following two runs off three hits in the fourth, and they extended their advantage with a solo home run in the fifth, making it a 5-3 game.
Shapiro singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Petit's infield ground out moved the Gryphon to third base, and Shapiro trotted home after drawing an errant pick-off throw from the Rams' catcher.
Trailing 5-4, the Gryphons scored their equalizer in the bottom of the sixth. Mindish led off with a single down the left field line, and Cunningham dropped a successful sacrifice yet reached safely on a dropped throw. Copley followed with another good sacrifice hit, moving the tying run to third base. Chafatelli came to the plate and hit a grounder hard enough to bring Mindish home and reset the game, 5-5.
Penna made team history in the same inning. With menace of the sophomore's hitting and the go-ahead run at third base, the Rams elected to give Penna an intentional walk, the first in recorded team history. The move proved appropriate, as FSC escaped the inning without further damage.
Farmingdale put a runner on base to start the seventh inning. Mindish made the play of the game when the Rams attempted a sacrifice hit, but the rookie Gryphon caught the popped bunt and threw to McNair for the team's second double play of the day.
With the game tied, 5-5, after seven innings, the Gryphons went to extra innings for the second time in team history in a Skyline game; the previous extra-innings game was against Yeshiva in 2016. From there, Farmingdale took control of the game, launching a three-run home run en route to the 9-5 win.
McNair and McAuley each struck out two batters from the circle in game two. Mindish had the team's only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run.
