Softball Breaks Wins Record in Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.—In the team's 2017 season finale, Sarah Lawrence College softball swept The College of New Rochelle in a non-conference doubleheader at Flowers Park on Saturday. With the victories, the Gryphons set a new record for wins in a season, reaching double-digits for the first time in team history.

IN SHORT
Sarah Lawrence defeated New Rochelle, 7-5.
Sarah Lawrence (10-21-1) def. New Rochelle (12-10), 10-5.

GAME ONE
Sarah Lawrence relied on a five-run seventh-inning rally to erase a three-run deficit and earn the win in game.

Sophomore Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) led off the day with a single and a stolen base before coming home to score on a single by junior Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest). CNR tied the game 1-1 with two hits in the bottom of the frame. Rookie Kelsey Copley (West Jefferson, Ohio/West Jefferson) singled in the second inning but was one of two Gryphons stranded.

Sarah Lawrence scored its next run in the third inning when Shapiro led off with a single and was followed with hits from rookie Mackenzie Mindish (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) and junior Kamaron McNair (Lawrence Township, N.J./The Hun School). Shapiro crossed the plate to retake an edge, 2-1.

The Gryphons were held to two hits in the next three innings as McNair and senior Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) both hit safely yet were left on base in scoring position.

The Blue Angels tied the game with an unearned run in the fifth inning, and the hosts took the lead with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Needing offense to avoid the loss, the Gryphons went to the seventh inning in a 5-2 hole.

Penna led off the top of the seventh with a single, and Shapiro followed with a base on balls. Mindish reached on a Blue Angel blunder that brought two Gryphons home and left the tying run on third base. Mindish scurried home on a wild pitch and tied the game, 5-5, with no retirees in the inning.

With a tie game and bases empty, the Gryphons restarted their offensive efforts with a McNair walk and single from rookie Karissa McAuley (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie). Sophomore Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) followed with a hit to load the bases, and the senior Chafatelli batted in the go-ahead run with the fourth hit of the inning. Rookie Isoke Atiba (Los Angeles, Calif./Duarte) batted in an insurance run, and the Green and White held a 7-5 advantage through six and a half innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, McAuley sat down the Blue Angels in order and clinched her third win of the season. The rookie threw a complete game with eight strikeouts against just three walks, five hits and one earned run.

From the plate, Shapiro (2-for-3), McNair (2-for-3), Chafatelli (2-for-3) and Penna (2-for-5) all notched multi-hit games.

The three-run comeback was the team's largest of the season after having trailed by one run in three previous wins. The Gryphons had not erased a multi-run deficit since turning a 4-0 game into an 8-7 win against St. Joseph's College Brooklyn in 2016.

GAME TWO
Mindish had the honor of recording the first hit of game two, singling in the top of the first inning. McNair tripled for the first time this season and brought Mindish home for the first run of the game. The Blue Angels responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. Defensively, Copley and McNair turned an inning-ending double play to save another run from scoring.

Cunningham reached on an error to start the second inning, and Copley was hit by a pitch. Atiba loaded the bases with a single on a perfectly placed attempt at a sacrifice. Penna scored a run with a sacrifice fly, and Shapiro notched her second triple of the season to score two more Gryphons and take a 4-3 edge.

CNR was held to one hit over three innings while the Green and White bats also fell silent through the end of the fourth inning.

In the fifth, Penna and Shapiro led off with back-to-back singles, and Mindish wore a pitch to fill the bags. From there, New Rochelle worked out of trouble and secured three-straight outs to end the threat. CNR carried that momentum to the bottom of the inning and used two hits to score the tying run, 4-4.

Sarah Lawrence's offensive efforts paid dividends in the sixth inning. Chafatelli led off with a single and Copley benefited as the third hit Gryphon hit with a pitch in the game. Penna batted in the go-ahead run with a single, and Mindish scored a pair with a two-RBI double, making it a 7-4 game.

New Rochelle recorded two hits and benefited from an SLC error in the sixth inning, yet the Green and White were able to minimize the damage and strand three runners as CNR scored one, 7-5.

Sarah Lawrence rounded out the season's scoring with three unearned runs in the seventh inning, capitalizing on hits by Coppley and Shapiro with a walk from Atiba. Pinch runner Lydia Mullan (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) made an appearance and scored the team's final run of the season.

Two Blue Angels reached base in the bottom of the seventh, yet neither advanced beyond second base, and SLC closed out the victory.

McNair earned the team's 10th win of the season and her second of the season; she struck out two batters and gave up three hits and a run. In a rare feat, starter McAuley left the circle but later returned to pick up a save, the Gryphons' second ever on record. Cunningham tossed a third of an inning and was charged with an unearned run.

At the plate, Shapiro hit 3-for-5 and batted in three runs. Penna went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three batted in. Mindish (2-for-4) and McNair (2-for-4) ended the season with a multi-hit game as well.

GOING STREAKING
Chafatelli ended her career on a four-game hitting streak, while Shapiro's was left at five. Four other Gryphons had a four-game hitting streak to end the season, including Penna, Mindish, Copley and injured catcher Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore).

MULTI-HIT EFFORTS
Penna led the team with 16 multi-hit games followed by Shapiro with 10. McAuley, Mindish and McNair each totaled eight multi-hit games.

WINS RECORD
For the second-straight season, the Gryphons softball program set a new record for total wins. SLC went 9-22 in 2016 and improved their record by one game in '17. SLC bettered its league record by two games, logging a 4-14 ledger in Skyline action and doubling their conference wins from the previous two seasons combined.
