KEY MOMENTS
The Gryphons started strong in game one, scoring two runs in the first inning. Sophomore
Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) reached first base and stole second before junior
Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest) hit a sharp shot infield single that caromed into the outfield, allowing Penna to score. Rookie pitcher
Karissa McAuley (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie) also singled and came home on an RBI single by rookie
Mackenzie Mindish (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional). With three hits, the Gryphons scored two runs to take a 2-0 lead.
St. Joseph's Brooklyn scored a run in the first and another in the fourth inning to tie the score, 2-2. Despite another single by Shapiro and one from sophomore
Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington), the Green and White were unable to regain the lead. With the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bears walked off game one with a home run to left field.
The Gryphons were held to two hits game two, as Cunningham notched her second of the day, and sophomore
Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) had an outfield hit in the fifth inning. St. Joseph's Brooklyn scored six runs in the game with just two earned.
On defense, Sarah Lawrence recorded one double play in each game. With the bases loaded in game one, Mindish fielded a grounder and stepped on third base before throwing across the diamond to junior
Kamaron McNair (Lawrence Township, N.J./The Hun School) at first base. In game two, Cunningham retrieved a grounder in the circle and tossed to Penna at second base who fed McNair for the 1-6-3 double play. Both McAuley and Cunningham pitched a complete game, and each tallied three strikeouts.
STREAK SNAPPED
Penna entered the day with a 12-game hitting streak but failed to hit safely on Saturday. The streak is the program's second longest in team history, two short of the record 14 set by
Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) in 2016.
