Men's Tennis Takes One of Three in Weekend's Matches Against Lehman, Cooper Union and Webb

Bronxville, NY - April 27-29, 2012

    Men's Tennis defeated Webb Institute on the road this Saturday, 5-4, following losses to Lehman College at home on Thursday (5-4) and to Cooper Union away on Friday (7-2).

    On Thursday, April 27, the Gryphons battled it out against Lehman College, but ultimately succumbed to the Ducks 5-4. Sarah Lawrence won the top doubles seed but fell second and third seed play, flipping those results in singles with the top three seeds losing to Lehman and flights four, five and six going to the Gryphons. 

    At first seed doubles, Gryphon sophomore Phil London (New York, N.Y./Horace Mann) and sophomore Nate Currier (San Rafael, Calif./The Branson School) beat their opponents Ducks' sophomore Michael Tai and sophomore Cesar Andrade, 8-6, and in singles play, third seeded Gryphon sophomore Aman Banerji (New Delhi, India/The Shri Ram School) defeated junior Mario Coto Betres 10-8, first year Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) bested freshman Andres Restrepo 10-3, and sophomore Sahil Bhalla (New Delhi, India/The Shri Ram School) took down freshman Leonardo De Oliveira 10-7.

     The next day, the Gryphons took to the road, facing Cooper Union at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY, where Cooper Union got the better of Sarah Lawrence 7-2, with Gryphon victories limited to fourth seed Banerji and sixth seed sophomore Lucas Hammermann.

    On Saturday, the Gryphons played their penultimate match of the regular season against Webb Institute on the Webbies' home turf in Glen Cove, NY. Sarah Lawrence pulled out their first win of the week, going 5-4 against Webb. 

    In doubles, London and sophomore Philip Naess (New York, N.Y./United Nations International School) beat out Webbies' Michael Chang and Sean Doran 8-6. London also bested Chang in first seed singles and Naess beat Doran in second seed singles. Banerji and Bhalla also won their third and fourth flights, respectively.

    Next up for the Gryphons before heading back to the USTA National Tennis Center for conference championships on Saturday, May 5, will be the last regular season match of the year against Yeshiva University on Wednesday, May 2. The match will be played at home at 7pm.
