EDGEWATER, N.J.—In the Gryphons' first match of the 2013 season, Sarah Lawrence College men's tennis fell to Yeshiva University, 9-0, in a non-conference match at Binghamton Racquet Club on Sunday.
In doubles action, all three pairs for Sarah Lawrence (0-1) struggled to gain momentum against a tough Yeshiva (2-2) team. The Maccabees swept the three matches with an 8-2 margin in each, putting Yeshiva in front, 3-0.
In singles action, Sarah Lawrence rookie
Cameron Basham (Los Angeles, Calif., John Marshall) dropped a pair of break points in the opening set and looked to bounce back in the second. The second set was just as fateful, however, and Basham lost his match, 6-3, 6-3.
The Gryphons' No. 1 player, junior
Phil London (New York, N.Y., Horace Mann), recovered from a 6-1 first set and hung with his opponent in the second before dropping his 6-1, 6-4 match.
In the end, Yeshiva proved too tough an opponent as the Maccabees won 96 games to only 21 by the Gryphons as YU swept all six singles matches to clinch the win.
Sarah Lawrence will use its spring break to continue to tune its game, and the Gryphons return to the court for their next match against NYU Polytechnic at home on Tuesday, April 2.
