BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—In dramatic fashion, Sarah Lawrence College men's tennis defeated Brooklyn College, 5-4, in a non-conference match at Andrews Courts on Tuesday.
In doubles play, Sarah Lawrence (2-4) jumped out to an early lead by winning two of the three available points. The No. 2 match saw Gryphons
Shotaro de Bourbon (Paris, France, International School of Paris) and
Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i, Parker School) pick up a solid 8-3 victory. The No. 3 duo of
Cameron Basham (Los Angeles, Calif., John Marshall) and
Nathan Thompson (Portland, Ore., Lake Oswego) earned an 8-0 sweep in to clinch the SLC advantage.
The No. 1 doubles match saw Brooklyn (0-8) pick up its first point when
David Zabiyaka and
Marvin Gill won the match, 8-6.
In singles play, Gryphon
Phil London (New York, N.Y., Horace Mann) won his third straight individual match, defeating his opponent 10-6 in the top individual position. De Bourbon also won his singles match, winning the No. 3 post, 10-4, to put Sarah Lawrence one point from clinching victory.
The Bulldogs were not easily dismissed as
Deshi Wu won the No. 2 position, 10-4, to close the gap to 4-2. In the No. 4 match,
Anthony Sideris came away with a 10-4 win, and
Andrew Au won the No. 5 slot, 10-6, leveling the match at 4-4.
With the deciding point on the line, Thompson kept his cool and opened up an early lead in the No. 6 match. Despite a charge by his Bulldog opponent, Thompson held on for a 10-4 win, sealing the team victory.
Sarah Lawrence will next face Cooper Union on Thursday when the Gryphons take on the Hawks at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Sarah Lawrence's next home match is slated for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, against Vaughn.
