Sunday Final ResultsÂ
MADISON, N.J.—Breaking seven team records and four meet records over three days, Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming took first place at the 2014 Ranger Invitational, hosted by Drew University, Dec. 5-7, at F.M. Kirby Pool. The Gryphons broke three team and two meet records on the final day to jump into the lead and secure their second Ranger Invite title since 2012.
SLC paced the field with 195 team points. The host Rangers led by eight points entering the final day but placed second with 170. Division II Queens College (140), Cedar Crest College (93) and Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham (85) rounded out the top five, while College of Saint Elizabeth (56), Ocean County College (46) and The College of New Rochelle (13) also competed.
In the 1650 yard freestyle,
Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) held off the field and picked up a win in the first event of Sunday evening. The senior's 1000-yard split was a mere nine seconds off her personal best, and she touched the wall first in 20:18.91, more than 15 seconds faster than her closest opponent.
The Gryphons qualified three finalists in the 200 backstroke. Sophomore
Gabby Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett) led the team to the wall in 2:27.58, earning her first individual victory of the weekend. Rookie
Elizabeth Kroll (Sacramento, Calif./The Met Sacramento) posted her best collegiate time to earn second place (2:33.24), while junior
Sam Amberchan (Alameda, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) had the top qualifying time and placed fourth in the final (2:34.14).
SLC also earned three spots in the final of the 200 breaststroke. Rookie
Hannah Lawson (Portland, Ore./Pacific Crest Community School) broke her own team record and also set a new Ranger Invitational best with a winning performance of 2:37.87. Sophomore
Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) placed fifth in the final with a swim of 2:51.51, and
Rachel Barkowitz (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) earned a sixth-place finish in 3:03.10.
Colette Harley (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) gave the Gryphons their second straight win by placing first in the 200 butterfly. The sophomore fell two seconds shy of her own team record but set a Ranger Invitational record with a season-best of 2:22.43. Classmate
Lydia Mullan (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) took 1.5 seconds off her preliminary time to earn fifth-place (3:15.30) in the final individual event of the weekend.
In the 400 freestyle relay, the Green and White made it three straight wins. Earning the victory by less than 0.5 second, Lawson, Quirk, Harley and Risica set an SLC and Ranger Invitational record in a combined time of 3:56.23.
Competing in Sunday morning's preliminaries,
Sarah Schnapp (Taiwan/Tzu Chi) recorded career bests in both the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke.
Sonia Abraham (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) earned season bests in the 100 free and 200 breast, while both
Sky Mihaylo (Albany, Ore./West Albany) and
Zoe Berg (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) scored personal bests in the 100 free.
Sarah Lawrence concludes the semester by hosting Bard College and Skyline opponent Purchase College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Gryphons will celebrate Senior Day before taking a month-long hiatus leading up to their final home meet against College of Staten Island, January 17, 2015.
