Sunday Final Results
Â
MADISON, N.J.-Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming broke four school records and three meet records on the final day of the 2014 Ranger Invitational, hosted by Drew University, Dec. 5-7, at F.M. Kirby Pool. After three days, the Green and White broke eight team marks and five Ranger Invite bests, rounding out a baker's dozen of new records for the weekend.
With 145 points, SLC finished fourth among the five competing teams. The host Rangers (170 points) topped the field, trailed by Division II Queens College (160) and Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham (156). Ocean County College (90) rounded out the field.
In Sunday's first event, rookie
Albert Riley (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) broke his own school record in the 1,650 yard freestyle. He improved upon his previous time by nearly a minute, winning the event in 18:23.11, earning his first collegiate invitational victory. Riley also rewrote another SLC best in the process, as his opening 1000-yard split was 11:06.09, a 12-second improvement over his own team record.
Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) was one of two Gryphon qualifiers for the 200 backstroke final. After breaking his own SLC record in the preliminaries, the senior bettered his time in the final, earning seventh place with a swim of 2:33.05. Sophomore
Nick Ransom (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) also qualified for the final and placed eighth overall with a season-best time.
Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)) picked up his first individual victory of the weekend in the 200 breaststroke. Touching the wall in a meet-record time of 2:23.37, the sophomore took 2.3 seconds off his own SLC record to win the event.
In the final individual event of the weekend, the 200 butterfly saw junior
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) win his third event of the meet. His time of 1:53.79 was 24 seconds faster than his nearest competitor though it failed to better his own meet record set last year. Martinez's time surpassed the NCAA Championships provisional qualifying mark.
The Gryphons concluded the weekend by setting a Ranger Invitational record in the 400 freestyle relay. Chu, Riley, Martinez and rookie
Brendan McAlevy (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) posted a time of 3:30.04 to win the event and beat out the Gryphons' own meet record.
In the morning's preliminaries,
Amit Sankaran (San Francisco, Calif./Mallya Aditi International) and
Owen Marks (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) both raced in the 100 freestyle with Marks setting a personal best in the event.
Sarah Lawrence concludes the semester by hosting Bard College and Skyline opponent Purchase College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Gryphons will celebrate Senior Day before taking a month-long hiatus leading up to their final home meet against College of Staten Island, January 17, 2015.
