MADISON, N.J.—The Gryphons broke two school records while Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming is in fourth place at the conclusion of day one of the 2014 Ranger Invitational, hosted by Drew University, Dec. 5-7, at F.M. Kirby Pool.
In the squad's first event of the evening, sophomore
Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)), junior
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo), and rookies
Albert Riley (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) and
Brendan McAlevy (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) teamed up to complete the 200 yard freestyle relay in an SLC record time of 1:34.97. The record is the first relay time to be broken by the Gryphon men this season. Chu and Martinez have partnered to set the mark in the event four times in the last two seasons, while Riley and McAlevy get their first share of an SLC relay record. The squad placed as runners-up in the race.
Riley returned to the pool in the next event to swim a personal best in the 500 freestyle, capturing second place in 5:17.76.
For the second year in a row, Martinez set a Ranger Invitational record in the 200 individual medley. He bettered his 2013 mark by 1.30 seconds, winning the event in 1:56.10. Senior
Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) also qualified for the championship final, taking eighth place with a season-best 2:35.83.
In his only individual race of the night, Chu swam to second place in the 50 free. His mark of 22.63 was 0.42 second faster than his meet-record-setting swim in 2013.
The night's final race saw the Gryphons' 400 medley relay earn third place. Martinez pasted his name on the SLC record board with an opening leg of 56.66 in the 100 yard backstroke, marking the 14th event in which the junior has held a team record. Chu, Riley and McAlevy rounded out the foursome with a combined effort of 4:01.19.
Having collected 50 team points on night one, Sarah Lawrence trails Division II Queens College (66), host Drew (52) and Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham (51).
