Match ResultsBRONXVILLE, N.Y. - In the Gryphons' home opener, Sarah Lawrence College men's tennis fell to York College (N.Y.), 7-2, in a non-conference match at Andrews Courts on Wednesday.
With the loss, Sarah Lawrence (0-3) still seeks its first win of its young season, while York (1-3) earned its first win of 2014.
In doubles action, York took an early lead by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
At No. 1, juniors
Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) and
Adam Neufeld (Bronx, N.Y./The Calhoun School) won the Gryphons' first match of the season. The Gryphons broke in the opening game and stayed in control to an 8-5 victory, closing the gap in the team scoring to 2-1.
York expanded its advantage with a shutout at No. 6 singles. Warkus picked up his second win of the day with a confident victory at the No. 1 spot. After breaking early, he held a 7-6 lead and won three straight games to clinch match, 10-6, and chip away at the 4-2 deficit.
Neufeld rallied to win three late games but was unable to hold on in his No. 3 singles match. With the Cardinals in front, 4-2, senior
Andrew Thurman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Winchester Thurston School) was unable to climb out of a hole in the No. 2 spot, and York clinched the victory, 10-5.
At No. 4, rookie
Aidan O'Brien (Mansfield, Conn./Edwin O. Smith) held serve for the first half of the match, but a pair of Cardinal break points gave the visitors a 10-6 win. In the final match on the courts, first-year
Jonah Blake (Newport Beach, Calif./Spanish River (Fla.)) tied the match at 6-6, but was overcome, 8-6.
Sarah Lawrence hosts a pair of Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches this weekend. On Saturday, the Gryphons host Webb Institute, and on Sunday, Culinary Institute of America pays a visit to Bronxville. Both matches are slated for 1 p.m. starts.
