Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) led the Gryphons as Sarah Lawrence College competed at the 2014 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Warkus highlighted the day by advancing to the final of the No. 2 singles flight. Having earned a bye by virtue of his regular-season record, he advanced to the final by defeating his opponent from St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 8-2, in the semifinal round. Warkus lost to Pratt Institute in the final, 8-2.
Rookie
Jack Bell (Washington, D.C./British School of Washington) also picked up a win in his singles flight. The first-year Gryphon won, 8-6, in his No. 5 singles quarterfinal but was overcome in his semifinal match.
At No. 1 singles,
Aidan O'Brien (Mansfield, Conn./Edwin O. Smith) lost in his semifinal, 8-2. SLC's No. 3 player,
Adam Neufeld (Bronx, N.Y./The Calhoun School), also received a first-round bye but fell in the semifinals, 8-6.
In the No. 4 singles flight, senior
Andrew Thurman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Winchester Thurston School) was knocked off in the quarterfinal, 8-3.
In doubles action, both Gryphon pairs won a match to advance to the semifinal round. The top Gryphon pair of Warkus and Bell defeated their Vaughn opponents, 8-3. SLC fell in the semifinal by an identical score.
No. 2 doubles pair Neufeld and Thurman blanked their quarterfinal opponents, 8-0, before a narrow tie-breaker loss in the semifinal, 8-7 (7-2).
Sarah Lawrence tied for fourth place in the team standings. Pratt won the event for the second-straight year.
