Match ResultsQUEENS, N.Y.-Sarah Lawrence College continued its 2015 campaign with a non-conference match against The City College of New York at Alley Pond Tennis Center on Wednesday. Though the Gryphons won three matches, CCNY came away with the 6-3 win.
In doubles action, junior
Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela/ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)) made his collegiate tennis debut a memorable one by winning his No. 2 doubles match alongside rookie partner
Andre Garibaldi (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury). The duo showed their athleticism by winning 8-1.
At No. 1 doubles, seniors
Adam Neufeld (Bronx, N.Y./The Calhoun School) and
Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) picked up five games in their 8-5 defeat. Sophomore
Aidan O'Brien (Mansfield, Conn./Edwin O. Smith) and rookie
Bowen Li (Shanghai, China/Maine Central Institute) won six games in their 8-6 loss.
Trailing 2-1 entering singles play, Sarah Lawrence (0-2) needed to win four of six singles matches to rally and came up short. City College (1-0) clinched the match with victories in the No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
Sucre earned his second win of the career by taking the No. 4 singles match in straight sets. After blanking his opponent, 6-0, in the first frame, he secured the necessary break point to win the second set, 6-4.
In the top singles spot, Warkus won his first set, 6-3, before his CCNY opponent charged back to level the match with a 6-4 second set. In a tiebreaker, Warkus edged his opponent to secure the No. 1 singles win, 10-7.
Sarah Lawrence enters spring break and will seek its first win in its next match on Saturday, March 28. The Gryphons are set to host Skyline opponent Sage in Bronxville at 1 p.m.
