SLC vs. Mount Saint Mary Match Results
PORT CHESTER, N.Y.—Following a two-week hiatus, Sarah Lawrence College men's tennis returned to action on Saturday, falling to The Sage Colleges, 6-3, in a Skyline match at Sound Shore Indoor Tennis Center. On Sunday, the Gryphons were swept, 9-0, by Mount Saint Mary College at Kaplan Tennis Center in Newburgh, N.Y.
In doubles, Sage (1-1, 1-0 Skyline) swept all three pairs matches. Sarah Lawrence (0-4, 0-3 Skyline) found itself trailing 3-0, needing to win five of the six singles matchups to recover. At No. 2 doubles, rookie
Bowen Li (Shanghai, China/Maine Central Institute) and senior
Adam Neufeld (Bronx, N.Y./The Calhoun School) won five games in their loss.
Sage went on to clinch the match by winning the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 matches in straight sets.
At No. 2 singles, senior
Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) won his second straight match after splitting the opening two sets. He won his super-tiebreaker, 10-2.
Rookie
Andre Garibaldi (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) earned his first collegiate singles victory in the No. 3 match. He cruised through the first set, 6-2, before winning the second set in a tiebreaker. Garibaldi narrowly edged his opponent, 10-8 in the super-tiebreaker for the victory.
Sophomore
Ben Dougherty (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Beacon School) won a hard-fought match at No. 5 singles to earn the Gryphons' third victory on the day. Dougherty dropped the opening set, 5-7, before rebounding in the second set, 6-4. In the super-tiebreaker, the Gryphon eventually triumphed, 14-12.
Against Mount Saint Mary (1-1, 1-0 Skyline), the Knights took all nine matches to sweep the day. In No. 1 doubles, Warkus and Neufeld picked up a team-best five games.
In singles action, Garibaldi won five games in his No. 3 singles match. Sophomore
Aidan O'Brien (Mansfield, Conn./Edwin O. Smith) returned to action and nearly picked up a set before falling 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4 singles.
Sarah Lawrence hosts St. Joseph's College Brooklyn on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
