QUEENS, N.Y.—The Gryphons picked up their first win of 2015 when Sarah Lawrence College men's tennis swept St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 9-0, in a non-conference match at Alley Pond Tennis Center on Wednesday.
Sarah Lawrence (1-4) got off to a perfect start, winning all three doubles matches. Seniors
Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) and
Adam Neufeld (Bronx, N.Y./The Calhoun School) earned their first doubles win of the season, shutting out their No. 1 opponents, 8-0.
In the No. 2 doubles match, rookie
Andre Garibaldi (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) and sophomore
Aidan O'Brien (Mansfield, Conn./Edwin O. Smith) secured their first victory as a partnership, winning 8-6. The No. 3 doubles match saw sophomore
Roland Wynter (New York, N.Y./Lower Manhattan Arts Academy) make his collegiate debut alongside junior
Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela/ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)), and the duo triumphed, 8-3.
In singles action, Warkus notched his third individual win of the season, yielding only one game in his 6-0, 6-1 win at the top position. Neufeld also earned his first singles victory, winning the No. 2 match in quick fashion, 6-1, 6-1.
The No. 5 match saw Sucre improve to 4-0 overall on the season with a 6-1, 6-1, straight-sets win. Wynter improved to 2-0 on his career by winning the No. 6 singles match, 6-1, 6-0.
In the middle of the lineup, Garibaldi and O'Brien dueled in hard-fought victories. O'Brien clinched the No. 4 match by taking the second set in a tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6(5). No. 3 Garibaldi was the final player on the courts, yielding his second set after winning the first. In the end, the rookie Gryphon pulled out a super-tiebreaker win to complete the team shutout, 6-3, 1-6, (10-6).
The win marked the Green and White's fifth-straight win over St. Joseph's Brooklyn (1-1), dating back to the 2011 season.
Sarah Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when the Gryphons travel to York College (N.Y.) at noon.
