Match Results

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—
Sarah Lawrence College men's tennis was defeated by Lehman College, 7-2, at Andrews Courts on Sunday.

Sarah Lawrence (2-8) fell behind early when Lehman (4-7) took the top two doubles matches to jump out to a quick 2-0 advantage.

In the No. 3 doubles match, Gryphons Andre Garibaldi (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) and Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela/ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)) scored an early break point and took a 3-0 edge. The Lightning stormed back in the middle of the match, winning five of six games to take a 7-6 lead. SLC tied the match at 7-7, but Lehman won the last two games of the 9-7 match, increasing the visitors' lead to 3-0.

Singles action saw Lehman make quick work of the No. 2 match. At No. 3, Sucre won a break point in each set but eventually yielded, 6-2, 6-4, clinching victory for Lehman.

SLC senior Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) put up a fight in the No. 1 singles match. After relinquishing a three-game advantage, he found himself deadlocked at 6-6 in the opening set. Warkus refocused in the tiebreaker, winning the first four points en route to a 7-2 win. He then won the last five games of the second set, triumphing 7-6(2), 6-1, to put the Gryphons on the scoreboard.

Playing a pro-set format, sophomore Aidan O'Brien (Mansfield, Conn./Edwin O. Smith) rallied from a 6-1 deficit to tie the No. 4 singles match at 7-7. In the end, his Lehman opponent came out on top, 9-7.

At No. 6 singles, sophomore Ben Dougherty (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Beacon School) also came from behind, turning a 7-3 deficit into a 7-7 stalemate. Once again, however, Lehman won back-to-back games to earn the win, 9-7.

In the final match on the courts, SLC's No. 5 player Jasper Soloff (New York, N.Y./Trevor Day School) gave up two early service breaks and recovered to tie the score at 5-5. After the two rivals exchanged games, the match went to a tiebreaker at 7-7. Soloff came out to an early 4-1 lead, but Lehman's Frankelly Ortiz won five straight points to go up, 6-4. Soloff fended off a pair of match points and retook the lead at 7-6 before finally winning the series, 10-8, and the match.

Sarah Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when the Gryphons host Cooper Union at noon.
