BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College men's tennis concluded the 2015 season by defeating Vaughn College, 8-1, in a non-conference match at Andrews Courts on Wednesday.
Sarah Lawrence (3-10) played on courts adorned in Green and White to celebrate the accomplishments of its three graduating seniors:
Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School),
Adam Neufeld (Bronx, N.Y./The Calhoun School) and
Derek Komar (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay). The match honored a long-standing rivalry with Vaughn (0-8), as the two programs had been conference foes until SLC joined the Skyline this year.
In doubles play, Warkus and sophomore partner
Aidan O'Brien (Mansfield, Conn./Edwin O. Smith) made speedy work of the No. 2 match, sweeping their opponents, 8-0. Neufeld and rookie
Andre Garibaldi (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) followed with an 8-1 victory in the No. 1 doubles match.
At No. 3 doubles, Komar and sophomore
Graham Gilleran (San Francisco, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) took a 5-1 lead before the Warriors rallied to tie the match, 5-5. The teams exchanged games to a 7-7 stalemate, triggering a tiebreaker. In the tiebreak, Vaughn went up 3-0, but the Gryphons came back to even the score, 4-4. Vaughn fought off one match point at 6-5, but SLC won back-to-back points to clinch the win, 8-7(8-6).
With the victory, Komar finishes his career undefeated in collegiate play.
At No. 4 singles, O'Brien was the first individual to take the court but was quickly tied up against a difficult Vaughn opponent.
Meanwhile, Warkus made quick work of his No. 1 opponent, winning seven straight games to close out a 10-2 victory. He concluded his career with a program-record 25 singles wins.
Moments later, Gilleran polished off a 10-3 win in the No. 5 singles match, clinching team victory for the Gryphons. Gilleran improved to .500 in singles play to round out the season.
With O'Brien still at work, Garibaldi shutout his No. 3 opponent in a shortened match, 6-0, and Neufeld finished his career with a No. 2 singles victory, 6-2, improving to 4-4 on the season.
O'Brien's singles match finally game to a head when the two combatants deadlocked at 9-9 and squared off in a tie-breaker. The pair changed courts at 3-3, and O'Brien went ahead 5-3 in a race to seven points. From there, Vaughn's Tobi Oladeji won four points in a row to clinch victory, 10-9 (7-5).
In the final match, rookie
Bowen Li (Shanghai, China/Maine Central Institute) won three games to earn the Gryphons' eighth point.
Sarah Lawrence concludes its campaign with three wins, one fewer than its total from 2014.
