THROGGS NECK, N.Y.-With Friday's competition in the books, Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming stood in third place at the midpoint of the 2016 Skyline Swimming Championships, hosted by Maritime College at Riesenberg Aquatics Center. Action concludes on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
MARTINEZ WINS TWICEThe day was highlighted by two victories and a record-breaking performance by
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo). The senior Gryphon won the 200 yard freestyle in a season-best 1:47.05, a time that was 0.40 second faster than his closest opponent and 0.07 second shy of the 10-year Skyline Championship record in the event. Martinez was also victorious in the 200 butterfly with a mark of 1:59.25, breaking his own meet record by three seconds.
RELAY RECORDThe Gryphons began the meet with a third-place swim in the 200 yard medley relay, setting a new SLC record in the process. Martinez,
Dawa Lama (New York, N.Y./The Beacon School),
Anthony Lee (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) and
Jack Langland (Ottumwa, Iowa/Ottumwa) combined to complete the event in 1:46.08. Their effort improved the team's previous mark set in fall 2014.
SCORING RECAPLee swam to third place in the 100 backstroke, posting a time of 59.96. With his personal-best time, the rookie became the first Gryphon to break the one-minute mark in the race this season. Junior
Nick Ransom (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) also scored a point in the event, placing 12th in a career-best 1:15.15.
In the 100 breaststroke, first year Lama led the Gryphons with a seventh-place swim of 1:08.69. Fellow rookie
Derick Edgren (Fort Collins, Colo./Auburn (Ill.)) scored individual points with his 10th-place effort of 1:13.84. Junior
Jericho Walker-Roberts (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) earned a team point by taking 12th in 1:15.90.
Behind Martinez's first place in the 200 butterfly, Lama stopped the clock at 2:35.36 for eighth place in the event. Ransom made his collegiate debut in the event and took 11th place in 3:07.56.
In the final event of the first day, Lee led SLC in the 50 free. He earned fourth place with a season best of 23.00 seconds, the Gryphons' fastest time of the season.
CAREER BESTSIn the 200 yard freestyle, Langland swam a career-best 2:07.80, an improvement of 1.24 seconds over his previous best. Edgren took 6.6 seconds off his fastest in the event, swimming a personal best of 2:11.97. Rookie
Charles Allard (Fall River, Mass./B.M.C. Durfee) took 12.47 seconds off his personal best, swimming the 200 free in 2:30.36.
Rookie
Shaurya Chawla (New Delhi, India/Pathways World School) swam a collegiate best in the 100 backstroke, stopping the clock at 1:32.78.
Langland also posted a career best in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in 25.31 seconds. Allard also took nearly a second off his personal best, swimming a mark of 29.03 in the event.
DAY ONE STANDINGSThrough seven of 14 events, SLC scored 98 team points. The host Privateers placed first with 316 points, followed by Mount Saint Mary College with 144 points. The Gryphons were followed closely by Purchase College (90), while SUNY College at Old Westbury (31) and College of Mount Saint Vincent (18) rounded out the field.
