TCNJ Meet Concludes with Lawson's Historic Times

Meet Results | Day 1 Recap | Day 2 Recap | Time Trial

EWING, N.J.—Junior Hannah Lawson (Portland, Ore./Pacific Crest Community School) became the program's first swimmer to record a potential NCAA Division III Championships qualifying time to lead Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming on the third and final day of The College of New Jersey Lions Invitational at TCNJ Aquatic Center on Sunday. Lawson posted NCAA B-Cut qualifying times in both the 100 yard breaststroke (1:05.25) and 200 breaststroke (2:20.70), putting the Gryphon on a potential path to the national championships in Texas in March.

2. East Stroudsburg University - 896 points
3. U.S. Merchant Marine Academy - 467 points
4. University of Bridgeport [two days] - 418 points

LAWSON'S MEMORABLE DAY
Lawson began the day by qualifying for the afternoon's 200 yard breaststroke final with a preliminary time of 2:22.06, the first NCAA qualifying time in Sarah Lawrence women's swimming history. Just 10 minutes later, the junior returned to the pool in a 100 breaststroke time trial, bettering her own school record with 1:05.25, also an NCAA B Cut qualifying time. In Sunday afternoon's 200 breaststroke final, Lawson took her top qualifying spot and parlayed it into a new Sarah Lawrence record of 2:20.70, breaking the Gryphon into the top 15 of Division III student-athletes this season.

The time puts Lawson on the bubble to receive a ticket to the NCAA championships in March, as last year's qualifying time was 2:20.69. *see note* Each spring, slots are allotted based on a distribution across all swimming events, so Lawson and her team will not know until the end of the regular season whether her time will be sufficiently fast enough to earn her a spot in the meet.

FREESTYLE RELAY RECORD
In the team's final race of the three-day invitational, the Gryphons put together a team-record swim in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Lawson led off with a personal-best 56.10, followed by sophomore Devon Peal (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), senior Gabrielle Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett) and rookie Naima Joy Mackrel (Woodstock, N.Y./Kingston). The quartet completed their relay in 3:46.81, more than six seconds faster than the team's previous best.

NOTABLE SWIMS
In addition to Lawson, nine other Gryphons scored points for their performances in individual events. Peal finished seventh in the 1650 freestyle with a season-best 19:17.20, including a season-best 1000-yard split of 11:38.45. Senior Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) won her final heat of the 200 yard breaststroke, placing ninth in a season-best of 2:47.03. Senior Lydia Mullan (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) also won her final heat, earning a ninth-place finish in the 200 butterfly with her season-best of 3:04.67

Three other Gryphons scored points in the 200 breaststroke, as Quirk was followed by rookie Sarah Blanche Klein (Locust, N.J./Ranney School) who earned 10th in a personal-best 2:55.73. Junior Rachel Barkowitz (Fleming Island, Fla./Dedham (Mass.)) placed 11th with a personal-best 2:56.72, and senior Sky Mihaylo (Albany, Ore./West Albany) was 12th, touching the wall in a personal-best 3:05.42.

In the 200 backstroke, junior Elizabeth Kroll (Sacramento, Calif./The Met Sacramento) earned points for 12th place after swimming a personal best of 2:26.93. Rookie Kaitie Dilan (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) also scored in the event, placing 16th in 2:52.05.

Mackrel rounded out the scoring with a 16th-place finish in the 100 freestyle (58.97), and Barkowitz added a personal-best in the event (1:07.84).

** Editor's Note: Official NCAA documents contain a discrepancy as to the 2015-16 qualifying time in the women's 200 yard breaststroke, among other events. This editor has chosen to recognize the 2015-16 Official Psych Sheet as the most-accurate source. -Pb
