Hannah Lawson (Portland, Ore./Pacific Crest Community School) achieved a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, leading Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming on day three of the 2016 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, hosted by Ithaca College on Friday. Action concludes on Saturday at the Ithaca Athletics & Events Center Aquatics Pavilion.
IN SHORTAfter day three, SLC moved up one position to 13th of 16 teams with 151 points. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute stands in first place with 642.5 points.
LAWSON THIRD IN BREASTSTROKELawson's breakout day began with an SLC-record breaking swim in Friday's preliminaries. In the 100 breaststroke, the sophomore posted a time of 1:08.03, breaking her own SLC record while qualifying for the championship final in sixth position. In the evening session, Lawson took nearly two seconds off her time and touched the wall in 1:06.29, securing third place overall. She previously placed 17th in the event after winning the C Final at the 2015 championships. In the team's fourth year in the league, Lawson is the second member of the team to ever achieve a top 10 finish at the UNYSCSA Championships.
PEAL PLACES IN BACKSTROKERookie
Devon Peal (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) swam a career best in Friday's preliminaries, completing the 100 yard backstroke in 1:01.74. The swim qualified the rookie for the B Final in 14th place. Peal took another 0.14 second off her time in the evening final, posting a career best of 1:01.60 to move up a position to 13th place overall.
800 FREESTYLE RELAYThe Gryphons collected another SLC record with the team's performance in the 800 yard freestyle relay. Lawson, Peal, sophomore
Elizabeth Kroll (Sacramento, Calif./The Met Sacramento) and junior
Gabby Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett) combined to complete the event in 8:29.63, taking nearly 10 seconds off the team's previous best. The performance yielded a 12th-place finish, the Gryphons' best in any relay event in the program's four years of participation at the UNYSCSA Championships.
CAREER BESTSIn addition to Lawson and Peal, four other Gryphons posted career bests in individual races during the preliminaries and finals.
