Softball Triumphs over Bay Path, 10-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—Sophomore Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) took over possession of two of the Gryphons' program career records when Sarah Lawrence College softball defeated Bay Path University, 10-2, at North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex on Monday. The Gryphons went on to fall to Albertus Magnus College, 7-1, in the afternoon.

IN SHORT
Sarah Lawrence def. Bay Path (0-1), 10-2 (5 inn.).
Albertus Magnus (2-0) def. Sarah Lawrence (1-3), 7-1.

IN THE RECORD BOOK
Vuyovich earned her record-setting hit in the first inning of the day's first game. Rookie Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) led off with a single, and Vuyovich followed with a single to left field for her SLC-record 40th career hit. Penna scored on a stolen base to put the Gryphons in front, 1-0, over Bay Path. During the play, Vuyovich also took over as SLC's career stolen bases record with 13 bags swiped.

WILDCATS RESPOND
Bay Path came to the plate in the bottom of the first frame and scored two runs on as many hits, edging the Gryphons, 2-1.

GRYPHONS TAKE CONTROL
In the second inning, junior Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) singled up the middle, and sophomore Em Hammett (Columbus, Ohio/The Wellington School) fired a line drive at the second-baseman for her first hit of the day. Penna brought both Gryphons home on a two-RBI triple, putting the Green and White back on top, 3-2.

In the third, rookie Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) led off the inning with a single, and fellow first year Olivia Henry (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) laid down a bunt for a successful hit. Rookie Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) brought Petit home on single down the right line for her first career RBI. Sophomores Kamaron McNair (Lawrenceville, N.J./The Hun School), Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest) and Chafatelli each batted in a run on the next three plate appearances. Hammett dropped a bunt and scored in the inning, while Vuyovich singled, and Petit earned a second hit in the same inning. When the dust finally settled, the Gryphons came away with seven runs on seven hits in the frame, capturing a 10-2 advantage.

SLC COASTS TO VICTORY
While the Gryphons were unable to score in the fourth or fifth inning, the SLC defense did its job by shutting out the Wildcats. On offense, Cunningham singled in the fourth, and Vuyovich doubled in the fifth, giving SLC a total of 14 hits in the game.

In the bottom of the fifth, BPU needed a single run to extend the game past the five-inning, eight-run cutoff. The first two Wildcats reached base, but Cunningham was able to cut off the lead runner at third base. A wild pitch put the runners at second and third, 60 feet from scoring. On the next batter, Vuyovich fielded a hard-hit ball and tossed it to Petit for the out at home. Behind and with the bases loaded, McNair stayed calm in the circle and pitched her way out of the jamb to close out the 10-2 victory.

GRYPHON LEADERS
Vuyovich went 3 for 4 in the game despite being the only batter not to cross the plate. Chafatelli and Hammett had two runs each, and Penna batted in two. McNair earned her first win of the season after recording two strikeouts and five hits in the complete game; her seven career victories are four more than any other Gryphon.

WELCOME TO THE PALMETTO STATE
After going winless during last season's southern road trip, Monday marked the Gryphons' first-ever win south of the mid-Atlantic.

AGAINST ALBERTUS MAGNUS
The Gryphons carried their momentum in to the second game of the day, scoring their lone run against the Falcons in the first inning. Penna again led off with a hit and came home on a sacrifice fly by Petit. Petit went on to finish the day 1 for 1 after a single and two walks. Vuyovich hit safely twice in the game, finishing the day with 44 career hits, five above the program's previous career leader. Hammett, Cunningham and McNair all had hits against the Falcons.

IN THE CIRCLE
Cunningham pitched the complete game against Albertus Magnus, allowing one hit or fewer in three innings.
