GAME ONEThe first day of spring was a brisk one, and it took five innings for the Gryphon bats to warm up. Yeshiva scored two unearned runs in the first inning and two more in the fourth inning. Junior
Erin Chafatelli (Nashville, Tenn./McGavock) led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk. Rookie
Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and sophomore
Kamaron McNair (Lawrenceville, N.J./The Hun School) loaded the bags with two more bases on balls. First year
Olivia Henry (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) batted in SLC's first run with a sacrifice fly, and Penna came home on a wild pitch, splitting the deficit to 4-2.
Still trailing in the bottom of the seventh, SLC needed a pair of runs to extend the game. Penna reached to lead off the lineup, and sophomore
Riley Vuyovich (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) followed with a double. McNair brought Penna home on a sac-fly, and Vuyovich tied the game on a YU error. With the teams knotted at 4-4, the game was destined for extra innings.
Both sides went down in order in the eighth inning, and YU picked up a run on two hits in the top of the ninth. In the end, SLC was unable to put a runner on base, and Yeshiva earned its first league win in the team's first year in the Skyline.
Penna's 1 for 3 game included two walks, two runs, a steal and a double. Rookie
Baylie Petit (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) reached base twice on a walk and hit-by-pitch. In the circle, McNair tossed an SLC-record nine innings, tallying five strikeouts and letting up one earned run.
GAME TWOIn the second game of the twinbill, pitcher
Mikayla Cunningham (Mayville, Mich./Millington) set an SLC record by allowing just two hits over her complete six-inning game. SLC scored its first runs of the game in the second inning after senior
Sam Amberchan (Alameda, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) walked, and Vuyovich hit a two-run home run, her first of the season.
SLC scored again in the bottom of the third inning. Henry singled to left field, and Petit's first hit of the day was an RBI single.
Chafatelli led off to start the fourth inning, and Vuyovich again blasted a shot over the outfield fence, adding a pair of Gryphon runs for a 5-0 lead.
Two more Gryphons scored in the fifth inning. Petit led off with a walk, and sophomore
Sarah Shapiro (Germantown, Md./Northwest) knocked her first extra-base hit with an RBI double; Shapiro eventually scored on a passed ball for a 7-0 advantage.
The Gryphons' final run came in the sixth as Penna singled and Henry hit a walk-off double to right field, clinching the 8-0 win.
Vuyovich's home runs gave her a pair of hits, two runs and four runs batted in. Henry went 2 for 3 in the game with an RBI, walk and run. Amberchan scored her first run of the season, and Cunningham finished with a season-best seven strikeouts.
